It's times like this that I wish we had more than two healthy starters.
But still, a series split will look good here.

Joe Panik is getting to Pat McCaw levels of obnoxious every time I see his name in the lineup. He's not as bad at baseball as McCaw is at basketball, but Montoyo is still spoon feeding a replacement level player with no upside way too many AB's. Espinal is way better defensively, and probably no difference from an offensive standpoint except maybe a tiny bit of upside. Would much rather see him in the lineup.

When he plays 3B, it’s a double whammy. And since he’s basically a poor man’s Biggio being a LHB and play 2B/3B, he doesn’t even fill a roster need. He just overlaps with what we already have.
Still not as bad as the number of times he played Jansen instead of Kirk. That legitimately may have cost us a win or two.

Apparently it’s day 2 of ‘leg fatigue’ after almost 4 full days of DH’ing.

The only thing I can think of is that Montoyo wants to show respect to "veteran" players (using that term loosely with Jansen) and not just push them aside for prospects, but Kirk and Espinal are clearly superior options over Jansen and Panik. It seemed like Kirk at least may have been winning the starting spot before he got hurt. Bad timing.
I just want to go a week without seeing Panik's name in the lineup. I don't think that's a lot to ask for, but with Montoyo, it probably is.

I have less issue with him when he shows up at 2B but he’s not a 3B and you can usually count on him to misplay at least one ball over there a game. If they started playing Espinal at 3rd in these games, though, they’d have to actually face the fact that Panik is really redundant on this roster.

Yeah playing him at 2B is a bit more justifiable, at least then he wouldn't be a liability defensively. He's not a good defensive 3B and he doesn't provide much value offensively, so giving him more PA's than he should be getting at a position where he's going to hurt the team defensively becomes even more egregious.

I don't have as much of an issue with Panik while Biggio is still establishing himself. It's not like Biggio has been killing it in any respect unless you count strikeouts.
And with Kirk, I don't have any issues bringing him along slowly. Fluke injuries can happen whenever but catching in the majors is a grind unlike anything the minors gets to see. He'll take over in time. It would be nice if Jansen could hit a bit in the meanwhile.

Panik's such a strange choice for the "Gud Vet Infielder" thing. Normally, those guys are versatile (if not very good) glovemen who can't really hit. Panik was a one-position player whose value was largely derived from his bat, up until the point where he became a much more feeble hitter, after which he became just kinda useless. At least we have so many bodies in the outfield that we aren't Menechinoing him just yet (I'm going to pretend that the one game where he DHed didn't happen).

That ball out to Biggio is catchable 10/10 times.

Tabler: I don’t think it’s fair to the players who have won a spot in the rotation to just hand Pearson a spot.
Me: We have 5 starters in our rotation? Who’s the 5th?

Matz has adjusted to the bit where the A's hit the ball hard by simply preventing the A's from hitting the ball. Clever.
