Why would we give a college senior that kind of coin? He has no leverage being a college senior...Don't get it, not that I am worried about signing everyone, just curious how this came about.

No idea. Possible he has fifth-year eligibility?

Don't know if any of this applies to Wallace, but a senior can be contemplating military service, entering the ministry, going overseas to play, maybe a two-sport guy who might give his other sport a semi-pro or pro stab. If as Callis says he should have been drafted earlier, maybe team thought enough of him to buy out another option or career move

Although he's 22, he was a redshirt junior because of Tommy John.

Schad wrote:Our total bonus pool is $5,775,900, plus another $288,795 in fun money from the 5% overage allowance. So after the Hoglund/Dallas/Carter signings, we're effectively at -$120,000. Not terribly difficult to make that up; Conor Larkin is a senior sign in the 9th round with a slot value of $153k who'll likely get quite a bit less than that, and the only other player who has any likely shot at getting overslot is Jalen Rudd, but I have no idea of his figure.

I'm presuming that we'll ultimately sign all of our top 10 round picks, with no one picked after the 10th round getting more than the $125k allotment.

Theoretically, now that we're overslot, what would happen if none of our other draft picks sign (or, more realistically, we sign a bunch, and then one or two don't sign at the end) and this puts us over our signing bonus allowance? Do we need to renegotiate everything? Pay some sort of tax? Lose future picks?

We'd lose our 2022 first.

Now at -$37,000. Tiedemann, Juenger and Cooke the only players in the top ten yet to sign.

Juenger has signed, and for underslot:

So $33,700 in the black. Now the only question is whether Tiedemann will take the remainder, or if we'll have a small amount of additional coin to wave in front of someone like Damiano Palmegiani if needed (who is in the weird position of being a 21 year old college commit, having played JuCo before signing a letter of intent to join Arizona).

Edit: $36,200 after Cooke, only Tiedemann remains of our top 10.

I'm curious to see whether some of these gambles pay off. A lot of risk in comp picks when we don't know what the new CBA will look like at all.

I wouldn't expect the system of compensation picks for unsigned players to change going forward...the current system gives a lot of leverage to the teams (which they didn't used to have), and thus they're more than happy to keep it, and the people getting screwed aren't even union members.

The PA hasn't shown much interest in sticking their necks out on behalf of draftees, or even early-career major leaguers, because it's treated as something of a zero-sum game where the benefit of those kids getting screwed it that there's more money to flow to the mid-career and older players who hold the most sway. This is, IMO, a huge mistake, because it has created an enormous advantage in fielding teams of young, cheaper (and often better) players and eschewing big-money free agents, but the PA has tended to suggest that the problem is collusion (and there might well be collusion), rather than the system simply creating incentives that work against both younger and older players.

We got Damiano Palmegiani signed, and he took pretty much all of our remaining overage.

Who do we have left unsigned in the top 19 picks we selected?

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
