That's we're calling Lopez up before Smith likely indicates one of two things:

- It's a very short-term callup, and we didn't want to cause further roster crunch as Lopez is on the 40-man, and Smith isn't, or
- Springer's going to be out a minute. Lopez is primarily a 2B, which isn't terribly useful with our current squad, but he can also play CF.

Afraid it's worse than that with Springer. As per usual with the Jays, the injury is worse than originally disclosed, a sprained knee.

Yeah, I was prepared for that after the initial "day to day" talk. They are simply not truthful about injuries (nor are they obligated to be I suppose).

That probably does it for any chance we had at making the playoffs, though.

Montoyo didn't sound optimistic that this is a short stay on the IL for Springer.

Schad: Lopez started 17 games in CF for New Hampshire and one game in CF at Buffalo. If Springer is out for a long stretch, they could also bring back Josh Palacios for a LH bat, but he's just back in the lineup after a long injury absence (almost three months) so I am sure the team wants him to have a lot of ABs.

They'll just call Biggio back up eventually after his rehab time is up. No need for Palacios. I'd like to see Smith at some point, though.

A left knee strain? Wow, that is not good news. It also means more grichuk despite guriel performing better recently.

Just read about the smith acquisition hopefully that allows them to get Gurriel’s bat in the lineup.

Yeah, as I said, I figured that Lopez's ability to play CF was an indicator that Springer was heading back to the shelf. Lopez has also been the better minor league hitter between he/Palacios, at a much younger age, so even with Palacios just returning from injury I'd probably go with Lopez.

Jays looking like they might be heading into a mini slump

Yeah, that's the issue with the amount of ground we had to make up. Assuming we don't mount a comeback for the ages, we'll be 13-7 in our last 20 games, which is quite good. But quite good is our baseline to even have a chance at the Wild Card, and we may need to be closer to extremely good down the stretch.

Winning about two-thirds of our remaining games (29-15) would be a hell of a finishing kick, but even that only gets us to 92 wins, which might not be sufficient (the Rays, Sox and Yankees are projected to win 94, 93 and 92 respectively). The AL East is as always a charnel house.
