That's fantastic for Wander. Nice guaranteed money, and he'll hit FA in time to still get a solid contract, assuming the next 12 years go as expected.

4 years is an overpay for Matz when we're still chasing an ace. We have other guys who can slot into a 5th starter role and they still may consider giving Pearson a shot at the rotation.

4 years is too much. Increases pressure to bring back Ray or other top arm.

Scattered thoughts here...

Pitchers that need a "reclamation year" will continue to jump at the chance of coming to the Jays and working with Pete Walker. He fine tunes their delivery and mental makeup, then improve a significant amount by the end of the year, then they cash in with another team.

I'm worried that teams will continue to overpay slightly for these pitchers, and the Jays will only benefit from their production for a very limited period of time. (1/2 a season in Matz's case)

Management will continue to let those pitchers go if the value doesn't match (which they should), and they will find the next pitcher that needs Pete's magic and repeat.

My projection / hope is that:
1. The pitchers who sign elsewhere for the money will maintain some of the improvement (but some regression), and not live up to the money given to them. Making other teams realize that overpaying for "Pete's Projects" is a losing scenario for them.

2. Future pitchers will value working with Pete long term, really mastering their improvements, and the Jays can better benefit from the development they put into these reclamations. I think this is the scenario we are seeing with Berrios - not that he was a reclamation though.

TLDR: Pete Walker needs to be locked up with a long contract so Yankees and Bo-Sox don't steal him.

Gammons is such a clown. Why doesn't he explain his statement in detail? Union wants all these guys to be UFA as soon as possible to drive up salary prices at a faster rate. At the risk of the player though. Some players lock in financial security up to a certain age due to injury risk mostly.

An interesting possibility. Come to the Jays for a year if you want to get paid. Kind of like Raptors being the development spot for fringe prospects.

The Cards used to have that rep when Dave Duncan was their pitching coach. They got a lot of good innings from guys picked up off the scrap heap, either owing to injury or underperformance.

No idea how much of it can be ascribed to Walker (we aren't that far removed from people calling for his head because our reclamation projects weren't performing), but he seems to be well-regarded by the staff, which helps.
