A year longer than I expected, but the AAV is pretty much what you'd expect.

Pretty solid

Not bad. He'll be 34 during that last year... Solid value initially, but I suspect we won't be able to judge the deal in it's totality until we find out how he ages.

Berrios fills Ryu's 20MILLION salary slot after Ryu departs in a year. Kind of a building block contract we've essentially already budgeted for and can work around with our other pieces. Ryu, of course, only cost us money,, but this deal validates the trade and covers management's butt to a degree. Might be the most significant move of our offseason...

i do very much like this. manoah and berrios locked down through a window of contention. berrios likely would have commanded more than that in FA if he pitches like he did as a jay last year. real nice signing.

Good. Makes the trade look better that we locked him up.

I think that essentially filling Riu’s contract moving forward is a good way to look at this, but if that is the case there should still be room to spend. Excellent work for a guy who was supposedly so committed to free agency.

There is one year of overlap. In 2023 they will both be on the books at 20.

Very solid deal though and definitely makes me feel way better about the trade. I had a bad feeling that it was a 1.5 year rental.

Hopefully this doesn't affect our ability to add in the next 2 years.

My feelings exactly. The trade would have looked terrible if Berrios had walked away for nothing in a year. This contract number is something that you could live with also. Solid move.

5th year opt out clause, keeps getting better.

The trade and prospect pacakage we gave up, essentially meant he was going to get paid, or else would have looked super foolish to give up all that for 1 and half years. Essentially it's 6 years for 120 mill (His next year is 2022 is 11 mill) if we managed to sign him as free agent.

Thats why the trade made sense. We could lose 2 starters but at least we have 3 solid guys still. Good injury record plus he throws the curve a lot which is a lower injury risk.

Opt out for him, or for the team?

E-Rod got a 5th year opt out, didn't he?

On a side note, although surrendering Martin and SWR really stung, the fact that we acquired Berrios along with his rights means that his signing doesn't cost us a 1st/2nd rounder in free agency. So, if you squint, you can almost add a 1st/2nd rounder to what we got back (Berrios) in the trade with the Twins.

E-rod got a 2nd year player opt out, IIRC

My bad. Memory fail. 5 year deal. Opt-out after 2...

If we signed next year, assuming he was with the twins, and signed the 160 mill, don't think it costs us a 1st/2nd rounder. It would been "losing their second-highest selection in the following year's Draft, as well as $500,000 from their international bonus pool for the upcoming signing period." So our 2nd rounder and 500K international dollars, don't think no matter how hard you squint that is equivalent to #5 overall pick and SWR.

Type A right? 2nd rounder minimum. Sometimes a 1st depending on the Twins year? I could be wrong.

I think you can see,, I'm still trying to justify the trade in my mind.

Good deal... $19M/per for a very legit #2 on a contending team is reasonable.
