5 year deal for a pitcher…

Along with Berios, we are really banking on durability.

Got their 4th starter. Split finger specialist. On the fence about him. Do they pursue a 3B?

yup. iffy about this one. one amazing year.

we will just have to see.

I guess Ray is not coming back.

I love it. Get us a upper rotation arm. Great Ray insurance (and if Ray comes back, our rotation is looking NASTY). I have to assume that if we're signing Gausman now, there's an understanding that the purse strings are going to be held open for the next 3-5 years at least, if not longer.

Mets offered more too and he still came here.

Good deal. We needed another 1a with Ray likely gone. Love that we went hard on Berrios first. He was always the prize.

Blue Jays, Kevin Gausman agree on 5-year, $110 million deal: Source - The Athletic

What will Gausman bring to the Blue Jays?

Kaitlyn McGrath, Blue Jays beat writer: Toronto was in the market for a starter to head its rotation and it looks like Gausman will be that guy. The Blue Jays have long coveted the right-hander, reportedly offering him a three-year deal last year, before he took the qualifying offer with the Giants. But, the Blue Jays have finally brought him north.

He’s coming off back-to-back strong seasons, where he’s struck out batters better than ever. Gausman has postseason experience with the Giants, and he’s also pitched in the AL East before with Baltimore. He now makes a Blue Jays rotation featuring José Berríos, Hyun-jin Ryu, Alek Manoah and potentially Nate Pearson even better.

What’s next for the club?

McGrath: The Blue Jays have said in an ideal world, they’d add two starters this offseason, so they’re still on the lookout for another starting pitcher, likely an arm that can slot into a back-end rotation role. That additional arm could come via free agency or trade.

The team is still in the market for more bullpen adds, and with the departure of Marcus Semien, they have to fill one of their infield spots, either at second or third base. Left-handed bats are a priority too, as the club tries to better balance its lineup.

Big move, can’t wait for the season to start!

Are Pearson / Stripling enough to make up the 5th starter so the FO can focus on the infield?

We letting Ray walk for sure, he probably priced out for what we budgeted, and I think we want that extra comp pick. Might be why we gave up a bit more to get Berrios in the first place. We are going to get to the end of 2nd round/comp round picks it looks.

5 years to 31 though, pretty risky...look at Ryu, who at the end of the year was right off, and we are just hoping he can be effective 3rd/4th man option for us at 20 mill...

There's no question that Gausman has been a different pitcher in 2020 - 2021 than he was previous. I'm iffy because handing out five year deals to older pitchers is always iffy, and because -- while Gausman's changed pitch mix is an obvious explanation for his mid-career star turn -- the FB/SF combo doesn't always age that well.

For all the complaints about Rogers not spending, we're throwing big money at older players. We'll find out in a couple years whether that's the right call.
