Post#1 » by anj » Mon May 16, 2022 3:57 pm

I’ve never started a thread in nearly 15 years on RealGM, but these are desperate times.

MARINERS (16–19) @ JAYS (18–17)

May 16 – 7pm ET: Chris Flexen vs. Yusei “Hoochie” Kikuchi
May 17 – 7pm ET: Logan Gilbert vs. Jose Berrios
May 18 – 7pm ET: Marco Gonzales vs. Kevin Gausman

Well, that's a good start.

Also, looks like Ray didn't make the trip with the rest of the team...

Is the HR ball the only way this team can score runs?

Time to find another manager and hitting coach man. :nonono:

This lineup is whack. Collins over Kirk in Dh, Tapia over Gurriel. Those guys really need the rest?

I guess the only guy that doesn't need rest is Tapia

Vladdy's brothers are both 15 years old. Vlad Sr was busy, sheesh.

The biggest issue with our offense isn't that it's too XBH focused, it's that we aren't hitting enough of them. Our batting average entering today was .233; the league average is .234. Our slugging average is also basically league-average at .379, but with the power in our lineup, that really shouldn't be the case. Combine our sudden decline in power with a low walk rate and what is probably unsustainably bad RISP hitting and you get a bad offense.

I very much doubt that getting a new hitting coach matters. The same hitting coach oversaw a top three offense last year (and a top 10 offense the year before) with most of the same players.

I still expect that the offense will be fine in time, but there's no question that a lot of hitters around baseball, particularly those with power, are having a real adjustment with MLB having replaced the rubber ball with one that appears to have the consistency of yogurt in a tube sock. But before anyone suggests completely overhauling their approach to deal with that change, it's worth noting that MLB seems to be actively trying to fix the baseball (because no-offense baseball is not good baseball).

Kikuchi with another good outing. How is it that he's been the 3rd best starter this year and better than berrios. Vlad may never hit another homer again.

Because we're dealing with a sample size of 7 starts, and fun things happen in small samples. Like, for instance, Kikuchi getting major batted ball good luck. He's been giving up more hard contact than ever, while also walking guys at the worst rate of his career, which is not a workable mix over a sustained period.

Berrios has just been all-around awful though.

17 posts? omg, the bandwagon died out, eh? lol...

anyway, that was a fun one to attend. good crowd for a monday night. always an enjoyable time at the dome with the roof open. balls travelling a bit more. berrios jersey is a solid giveaway.

kikuchi is def on it right now, pitched a gem. he was working that fastball.

bats came alive, especially with RISP! think they enjoyed being home after a rough road trip.

they definitely needed that one tonight.

this is such a vibes-oriented team and hopefully this gets them going during a crucial week against mediocre opponents.

on to the next one.

That was a shockingly bad swing, if it's the one I'm thinking of.

The catcher set up a foot and a half outside the plate - where was he expecting the ball to go?!

Teo with an awful at bat there. This team is really easy to pitch to right now. Just stay outside the strike zone.
