Kiley McD had Toman ranked 15th, stating that he has the same sort of confidence in his bat as Austin Riley and Nolan Gorman. Which, yeah, I could live with that.

In terms of playing around with the numbers, say that Barriera comes in somewhat above slot ($3.75m or something), Toman gets CBA money ($2.25m maybe), and the other two sign for around slot ($2m combined). That would be $8m spent, leaving us with a little less than $800k to spend on rounds 3 - 10 combined.

Which I'm totally fine with. Get some major talent in, and then tomorrow we can draft a bunch of 26 year old journeymen welders or whatever. Though it's worth noting that both Kendall Graveman and Jordan Romano were el cheapo picks to save against slot, so they aren't all just filler.

Edit: how convenient that they just had that Jays hat kicking around at the Toman household, heh.

Could Kasevich come in at a discount, being taken in the second round and ranked at 67th (mlb rank)
Edit: I guess it’s only seven spots?

I really like what we did on day 1.

That being said, these kids are going to be massive trade chips during the next few years as we shoot towards a WS berth. Almost makes me a little sad that we may not see these kids in the system for long. Who knows...

I've always been curious why does MLB insist or hold the Draft during the season in the middle, when all the major other sports hold their "big draft" in the offseason. Atleast now they moved it to middle of the allstar break when nothing is going on, but was curious if there was a specific reasoning to it?

Actually, there are always unicorns if your scouting department is on its game. I never take rounds 4-10 for granted as mere money manipulation to get guys in the first three rounds under contract.

Two things, if I had to guess.

i) in Baseball, unlike the other sports, a draftee isn't expected to play immediately, or even for the next few years. So timing is less important (and they have some late-summer leagues as well).

ii) The sources of the draftees (HS and colleges) tend to have their season end around now, so they're not drafting players out of active teams and/or making them sit out.

Concurrent with the end of the high school/college seasons.
