It isn't necessarily related. We needed a bat and this is an upgrade over Espinal and Biggio.

But yeah, I am nervous to hear what the imaging shows.

He is a good defender, but has been a terrible hitter for almost three years. I was hoping for a better bat than DeJong to be honest. However, he is an upgrade over Espinal and Biggio.

Jays are asking about Teoscar as well.

He's cover for Bo, and a right-handed power bat for the bench. Might see reps in the 2B logjam, but this really puts Espinal under the gun...at this point in the 2B sweepstakes, there are now players who i) defend better at both 2B/SS, ii) hit LHP better, iii) hit RHP better, and iv) run the bases better. Doesn't leave him much utility as a utility guy.

Hopefully this means we can also move Bo from SS to 2B and start DeJong at SS. We no longer have to play Espinal and Biggio so much.

DeJong is a wildly inconsistent hitter who was flat-out terrible at the plate from 2020 - 2022. Over the past four years, he's hitting .207/.285/.368 in over 1100 PAs. That's really, really bad. And after a hot stretch of a few weeks to open this year, he has reverted back to being really bad at the plate as well.

He fills a need as a backup SS and bench bat that we could acquire for sweet fk all. We should not under any circumstances be moving players around to get DeJong in the lineup full-time.

DeJong’s value speaks to the fact that the Cards needed to send cash along with him to get a 24 yr old single A reliever that didn’t appear anywhere on our top prospect lists.

Surprised we didn't get in on the: Tommy Pham, basically Arizona got him for 17 year old DR International Signee, he's unranked, like we didn't one of these lotto tickets to give to Mets. On top of that Mets are paying most of the salary for Pham, surely he could been a useful bat off the bench or play platoon with Varsho.

I suspect that acquiring Tommy Pham or any outfielder for that matter would be seen as an admission that the Varsho acquisition has not worked out. Which it hasn't.

Either that or Varsho is so valued that Atkins doesn't want his playing time split with anyone.

He's only playing until Bo gets back.

And the Paul DeJong era is thankfully over. I'm glad in the end the organization didn't double down and keep DeJong at the bottom of the roster when there were better options such as Schneider.

I really have no issues with the DeJong trade in the end. We essentially traded a marginal prospect and I assume the Cards "cash" they sent covered most of his remaining salary and $3M of buyouts. It was a reasonable cost for a stopgap and it made sense to trade for him. Unfortunately he sucked even more then we expected him to suck.

The issue in the end was the team could not get another deal done for a RHB - hopefully Schneider continues to hit pretty decently for the next 30 games to try to fill that hole.

:banghead:

Not that I had any interest in keeping him -- but it figures he now starts hitting.

His body language screamed that he didn’t want to be in Toronto. I honestly think he tanked.

Return to Toronto Blue Jays
