I believe the lineup needs a bit of a tune up. Seriously having two guys that can strike out just as easily as hitting a home run isnt what you want as your 4, 5 hitters. I believe a more balanced lineup with our two big home run hitters not back to back would be great.

Here is my ideal lineup.

1- Reed Johnson
2- Alex Rios
3- Vernon Wells
4- Troy Glaus
5- Lyle Overbay
6- Frank Thomas
7- Aaron Hill
8- Gregg Zaun
9- Royce Clayton


I think this would prove to be a much more balanced attack, and every time Vernon got on we wouldnt have to worry about two consecutive strikeouts. Instead- we would have CLUTCH Overbay bringing in runs. I seriously think this will end up being the Jays lineup eventually.

but then the first 4 hitters in the lineup are all right handed batters.. i think gibbons is trying to avoid having that happen

Last year all 4 were righties and it worked just fine. When you face a lefty you change the order back and put Overbay at 2

I like the lineup you posted but I think I'd put Thomas 5th and Overbay 6th.

I'm really not a big fan of Overbay in the top half of the lineup

I agree, and I can't see Thomas batting under the 5th spot too

Clearly you only watched the second half of the season. When Rios was going crazy the first half of the season when he was an All Star, he was the 2 hitter. Vernon was 3, and Troy was 4 with Lyle at 5.

Neither of you are right or wrong entirely. Rios started the season batting 6th, he moved up to 2nd temporarily. Cat spent more time there than he did, because he didnt hit nearly as well when he got back and they flip flopped the 2 of them (Cat 2nd vs righties, Rios 2nd vs lefties).

I'm not a fan of Overbay batting 2nd against lefties.

I think Hill would be good to hit 2nd vs Lefties. He does a good job of getting on base.

Personally I would have no problem at all putting Hill at 2. But then what would the order be?

I like Lyle near the top of the lineup - the more AB's that guy gets, the more rallies and runs we'll have.... He is actually a perfect 2-hole hitter for us, he switches it up as far as lefty/righty, he has a good OBP, and he has 4 power hitters protecting him from behind... I think the only real question is with Rios, because he would also hit better, say, before Frank Thomas.

Zaun has been struggling early, but i hope they dont give us too much Phillips. Hill deserves to be around better batters, but so far Clayton has actually been batting great!

Well if Royce Clayton continues batting near .350 it doesnt matter what the hell the order is.

Thomas for his career is pretty good contact hitter, he's struck out a few times, but just give him a bit longer to get in the zone. The best is still to come from him (if he stays healthy of course). He and Glaus also take their share of walks to get on base. Personally, I like the lineup as is right now.

Rios is going to have to shorten his swing some to go into the two hole. I still think it's a little long and that he's too prone to the strikeout. That said, batting 2nd might be a cure for that particular illness.
