Quick Chacin gives Jays series edge
By Cathal Kelly
Hill's two-run double sealed the game, which gave Gustavo Chacin his first win of the year in the nearly empty dome. Announced at 15,218, the actual crowd looked closer to the size of an Italian wedding reception.

The result was a strangely intimate atmosphere. The players could clearly be heard calling for the ball. The same went for heckling fans.

On Deck
By Blue Jays Update
Jays manager John Gibbons was full of praise for Royals rookie 3B Alex Gordon after seeing him up close this week. "He's got a quick bat. He looked so relaxed up there," Gibbons said. "It hasn't happened for him yet, but guys who have that much talent usually don't miss."

Jays go on the offensive
By Mike Rutsey
Chacin appeared to be cruising along until he gave up a two-out solo homer to David DeJesus in the third. From that point on, the Royals were squaring up more of his pitches and after Reggie Sanders drilled a leadoff double in the sixth, manager John Gibbons yanked him.

But why yank him so early?

"We won the ballgame," Gibbons replied. "You don't call me Captain Hook for nothing.

What you see is what you get in left-hander Chacin

But it's becoming more and more apparent that with Chacin you have to accept that nothing is going to be tidy. He seems destined always to walk that fine line between disaster and delight, and no amount of counselling or coaching is going to change his pitching personality.

Glaus powers Jays to AL East summit
By Jeff Blair
After watching two other teams open their baseball seasons, it was time for the Toronto Blue Jays to display their wares before their own hometown loyalists.

And the Jays did not skimp for the special occasion. There was a sellout of 51,125 at a festive Rogers Centre last night to greet the team, which began the year on the road with five games in two cities.

Meche in the Royals' mix leaves bitter taste
By Jeff Blair
The Royals were the visiting team in this game, which was watched by 15,218 fans. But it sure felt as if the Blue Jays were the team taking the win and getting the hell out of Dodge. With Towers starting last Tuesday's 6-3 loss, Chacin on the mound last night and Ohka scheduled to pitch tonight, the baseball phrase "he pitched just well enough to lose" is aching to be unveiled.

Blue Jays 7, Royals 4
By Jeff Blair
"I know how bad the numbers were last year - I mean, they post them on the scoreboard every game," Hill said, smiling. "I've put in a lot of extra work with (hitting coach) Mickey Brantley this year and it's tough to explain but I'm 'feeling' what I'm doing right now at the plate. I've become a little more 'hitterish,' I guess. Last year, I was just kind of swinging at pitches."

Gustavo Chacin outing short, mostly sweet as Blue Jays down Royals 7-4
By Shi Davidi
The Blue Jays (5-3) had just taken a 5-3 lead in the fifth and Gibbons didn't want to give the Royals (3-6) a chance to get back in the game. On came Casey Janssen, who surrendered a sacrifice fly to Ryan Shealy before escaping with a one-run lead and he, Jason Frasor and B.J. Ryan, who pitched the ninth for his third save, took care of matters from there.

"I still felt great and I didn't throw many pitches," Chacin said of the quick hook, "but we've got a great bullpen and they did a great job."

Looks like the Dome will be closed tonight. I always like games better with it open for some reason.

Our lineup should mash soft-tossing lefties. Hopefully we jump ahead early to keep Ohka comfortable.
