Blue Jays' bats awaken
By Cathal Kelly
As the sun set, Ohka went out under the figurative glare and held the hot Boston lineup for five crucial innings. Then Thomas sledge-hammered a Wakefield offering 490 feet into the Volvo sign rising above the seats in left field. Hill contributed a career-high four hits, including a ninth-inning two-run homer that sealed Toronto's 7-3 victory over the Red Sox.

Jays turn the tables on ugly slump
By Richard Griffin
"In the past, when we've made mistakes like that, especially in this building, they've come back to haunt us," Wells said. "The troubles we've had over our last four or five games have opened our eyes. When we do make mistakes we have to come back out and score some more runs and try to forget (mistakes) right after they happen."

The Jays snapped their losing streak, not because they played any better as a team than they had over the past week, but because Wells and Frank Thomas stepped up early in the contest and became the leaders they can be. Thomas's mammoth home run silenced the crowd and turned a one-run deficit into a one-run lead in the sixth.

Bad news for B.J.
By Ken Fidlin
The Blue Jays have moved injured closer B.J. Ryan from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day which means his return to active bullpen duty can't happen before June 15, or about nine weeks since he last pitched on April 14. Originally, after elbow surgery was ruled out by Dr. James Andrews, it was suggested Ryan would be out from six to eight weeks. Ryan has a strained tendon in his pitching elbow and is currently resting it for a period of a month. This latest move means he will require at least another month of rehab.

Jays rebound
By Ken Fidlin
Later on, after the game had taken a bad turn for Toronto, the Blue Jay with the best track record of them all -- Frank Thomas -- delivered in a big way. Wells walked to lead off the sixth with the Jays trailing by a run and then Thomas swatted an 0-1 pitch on a line to left-centre. It still was rising over the Monster seats when it collided with an advertisement for a Swedish automobile, almost ripping a third "O" in Volvo.

"It felt good to get a couple of hits two days in a row," said Thomas, who now has 490 career homers. "It does a lot for the psyche. I've been scuffling bad. I've always been a notoriously slow starter in April. I hope this is a signal of better times ahead."

Hughes to make debut vs. Jays
By Associated Press
Phil Hughes will be making his major-league debut earlier than expected.

A day after getting swept by the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees said yesterday they plan on having their top pitching prospect start Thursday against Toronto.

Hughes is 2-1 with a 3.94 ERA in three starts this season at triple-A Scranton.

Toronto bats come alive in Boston
By Jeff Blair
Ohka appeared to be failing in the fourth inning after giving up a two-run double to Dustin Pedroia, but he struck out Julio Lugo and Kevin Youkilis, with David Ortiz on deck, to end the threat. Then it was Casey Janssen's turn in the sixth, when, after a Royce Clayton throwing error, Janssen induced Youkilis into an inning-ending grounder. Jason Frasor pitched 11/3 innings for his second save.

Drew making his presence felt in Boston
By Jeff Blair
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was not one of those who bought into the idea that the Red Sox were adding something toxic to an already combustible clubhouse mix when they added Drew, whose attitude has often been questioned, even before he left $33-million (all currency U.S.) on the table in Los Angeles to exercise an out-clause and sign with the Red Sox for five years and $70-million. Drew signed with the St. Louis Cardinals after his holdout and was later ripped by Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa in the book Three Nights in August as, essentially, a waste of talent. Back in spring training, he'd chide anybody who suggested Drew's addition was anything but a plus, even though it took the Red Sox weeks to complete language in the new contract because of Drew's history of collecting serious injuries.

"I told you we'd win another game this year." - Gibbons
By Jeff Blair
IMPRESSED: Aaron Hill's two-run home run came after he'd made a boneheaded play in the field, settling for an out at first base when he could have tagged David Ortiz, who rumbled right in front of him on the way to second on a J.D. Drew grounder. The two men had an animated conversation after the play was over. "He (Ortiz) told me: 'You know me, when I get going I can't stop,' " said Hill. He could laugh about it afterward. Redemption's easy to find in this game if you just hang around enough.

UNIMPRESSED: Catcher Gregg Zaun is hitting .190 and that's one spot where the organization has practically zero depth.

NEED TO KNOW: The New York Yankees are going to start Phillip Hughes, their highly-touted pitching prospect, on Thursday against the Blue Jays. "It's a necessity for us, but they don't think it's the wrong time for him," Yankees manager Joe Torre told MLB.com. "We certainly had visions of him coming up later on, but we also preface that with, 'If everybody stays healthy,' and that hasn't been the case."

Jays snap skid
By Howard Ulman
Wakefield's teammates didn't hit any homers to support him after Manny Ramirez, J.D. Drew, Mike Lowell and Jason Varitek connected in the third inning of Boston's win Sunday night.

"I guess the wind was blowing out pretty good, but it didn't help those balls. Those balls were hit pretty good," Gibbons said.
