Ohka the right tonic for what ails the Jays
By Allan Ryan
After opening the weekend with two losses to Texas, the Jays' bullpen was limited. The team had lost four in a row at home, was playing under .500 overall and, one month in, was no closer to stifling the perception that its rotation was essentially a two-man operation.

Gibby, there's no hiding in baseball
By Richard Griffin
The Jays' easy 7-3 win over the Rangers yesterday at the Rogers Centre was a piece of cake to explain to media for happy Jays manager John Gibbons. But a manager's true image is reflected in the wake of a tough loss.

Those emotions of negativity had been on display from the mercurial skipper following his team's second straight loss on Saturday. His closed office door after losing 9-8 in 10 innings made it abundantly clear why this Jays team would have trouble in a tough pennant race.

Hill turning into a double threat for Jays
By Mark Zwolinski
"It's experience now. Aaron is more comfortable, he knows hitters, he knows what his pitchers are doing so his positioning is better in the field ... and he has a very good first step and a low centre of gravity that allows him to make those off balance plays ... and he's always had this (great throwing arm)," Jays manager John Gibbons said.

Ohka fills Jays' need
By Ken Fidlin
Ohka responded with his best outing of the year, a seven-inning, five-hit, three-walk, one-run performance, on the way to a modest milestone, his 50th win in the big leagues. He had the advantage of working with an early lead that grew as time passed and he seemed to settle into a comfort zone on the mound after struggling briefly with his control in the second inning.

Hill makes his mark early
By Ken Fidlin
With just one more game in April, Aaron Hill has been arguably the Blue Jays most valuable player in the opening month of the year. After going 3-for-4 yesterday, Hill is hitting .292 with four homers and 15 RBIs while playing some sensational second base.

Ohka gives Jays' bullpen a needed rest
By Robert Macleod
"We needed that, especially after [Saturday]," Gibbons said after yesterday's triumph, which will allow Toronto, 12-12, the chance to earn a split in the four-game set with Texas, 10-14, in tonight's finale.

With the sunlight pouring into the stadium, Ohka warmed to the challenge and gave the Jays just want they needed: an outstanding effort that also provided the beleaguered bullpen with some downtime.

Towers out of rotation
By Robert Macleod
A day after the mercurial pitcher gave up five runs to the Texas Rangers on five hits, including three home runs, in a 5-3 Texas win at the Rogers Centre, the Toronto Blue Jays said the right-hander was being dropped from the starting rotation.

In his place, the Jays elevated veteran Victor Zambrano from the bullpen. Zambrano, who isn't even a year past reconstructive elbow surgery, is expected to make his first start on Wednesday in Cleveland against the Indians.

Blue Jays catcher Zaun to go on 15-day disabled list with injured right hand
By Canadian Press
Vernon Wells went 4-for-5, scoring four runs and driving in three, and Roy Halladay struck out 10 in eight innings Tuesday night as the Toronto Blue Jays took advantage of four Boston errors to beat the Red Sox 10-3 and finish a two-game sweep.

"It's never an easy place to play, but we always seem to play well here," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "We came in here limping and we've been kind of dry for a while. Nothing was given to us. We played a pretty darn good ballgame."

Ohka goes seven strong innings to propel Blue Jays to victory
By Mike Koreen
With the bullpen gassed after six relievers saw action in a 10-inning loss Saturday, Ohka gave up just one run and five hits in a season-high seven innings to lead the Jays to a 7-3 win over the Texas Rangers Sunday before a crowd of 27,516 at an open Rogers Centre.

Ohka's second victory in a row was the 50th of his career, putting him second among Japanese pitchers behind only Hideo Nomo (123).
