Proud dad Litsch gets his big day
By Dave Feschuk
Yesterday Rick was regaling a reporter with stories of his son's early and enduring love for the grand old game. At age 4 Jesse would entertain fellow fans in the stands of various Florida ballparks by rhyming off the starting lineups of major league teams. At age 8 he didn't give up a hit or a run for an entire Pony League season, which might not have been so impressive if he hadn't also batted 1.000 for his undefeated team.

And at age 16, a few years before he'd be picked by Toronto in the 24th round of the 2004 draft, he made it to the majors without even throwing a pitch. He won an essay contest with a composition titled "Why I Want To Be A Devil Rays Intern."

After a year as a gofer in the Tampa Bay public relations department, he accepted an offer for a better gig: Bat boy.

"There's fight in these guys. It doesn't always look like it," Gibbons said. "Sometimes out there it seems like kind of a dead atmosphere, but there's fight in 'em."

Glaus epitomized that scrappiness last night. The burly third baseman missed the previous two games after getting hurt during a run to first on Friday. The culprit is Glaus' left foot, plagued by a golf ball-sized bone spur which surgery cannot correct. For now, perhaps forever, Glaus will be playing through pain.

"It's sore and it's there and it's gonna be there. That's just the way it is," Glaus shrugged.

Halladay hoping for early return
By Cathal Kelly
Roy Halladay was back in the Blue Jays clubhouse yesterday afternoon, four days after being rushed to hospital for an operation prompted by acute appendicitis.

The team ace is targeting a return on the short end of the projected 4-6 weeks he is due to be on the sidelines.

"I'm hoping no more than four (weeks) before I'm in a game," Halladay said.

Back with a bang

But for the third time in their past four games, hope won out as the Jays, thanks to a two-run homer by Glaus in the eighth, his third RBI of the night, rallied from a 3-0 deficit to score a 5-3 victory over the Orioles. It was the first victory for the Jays over the Orioles this season. In April, Baltimore swept a three-game series at home.

"Troy has been one of the marquee hitters in the game for a number of years," manager John Gibbons said. "He always produces runs.

The American dream
By Mike Rutsey
"He's the guy who's pitching the best right now, he's on a roll," manager John Gibbons said.

Because the Jays have off days this Thursday and next Monday, they don't require a fifth starter again until May 26th. Gibbons said that following his start, Litsch will likely be returned to the minors.

Glaus powers Jays to victory
By Robert Macleod
Glaus felt well enough to play last night and he wound up making a heel of Danys Baez, the Baltimore Orioles' reliever, who came into the game in the eighth inning, only to give up the winning moon shot to left field, which broke up a 3-3 ball game.

"It was a good win all around," said Glaus, who also batted in a run in the sixth inning, giving him three in the game. "We pitched well, we scored some runs. It was a good all-round game for us."

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 3
By Robert Macleod
IMPRESSED: A question for all you armchair philosophers out there: When it comes to the heel injury that has laid low the Blue Jays third baseman at times this season, is the Glaus half full or half empty? After taking the last two games off to rest his aching left heel, Troy Glaus came back and belted the winning two-run homer in the eighth that broke a 3-3 tie.

UNIMPRESSED: With the leaky Baltimore bullpen which has now allowed runs in 16 of its last 21 games.

Troy Glaus has been awesome this year. We need Frank Thomas and Vernon to take a page from Glaus. And I expect more from Overbay and Rios. Let's start pounding some runs.
