Post-Gazette - The Pirates have made known to other teams that shortstop Jack Wilson is available, and the Toronto Blue Jays are interested.

But any trade is unlikely to happen until after Major League Baseball's July 31 non-waiver deadline, mostly because the Pirates surely will be asked to pick up a significant portion of the $14.25 million Wilson is owed after this season. Such deals tend to take more than the nine days remaining before the deadline, and no firm talks are known to have begun with any team.

After July 31, there is another month in which trades can be made if a player clears waivers, but Wilson is no certainty to do that. That makes the offseason more likely.

Can anyone explain to me why this Wilson dude is earning 14.25 million?? Please tell me it's for more than 1 year

Wilson's an unbelievable defensive shortstop, but he's 29 and hits like Royce Clayton. I don't see how this is much of an upgrade. We might as well start Johnny Mac if we're looking for an all-glove no-bat shortstop (which I'm not advising in any way, shape, or form).

Might as well just start Johnny Mac every game...

Yeah I don't think we need him either. He's a defensive master but I think we need some pop even at the SS position, being in the AL.

I think you might be over valuing Glaus here. Toronto would have to eat a TON of Troy's contract in order for either team to give up anything remotely close to that.

Heard from where? This is an incredibly broad statement with no backing, especially with Riccardi being adament that he isnt trading anyone signed for next year.

I don't think I'm overvaluing him at all.

Troy is the 2nd best 3B in the AL.....tell me someone better than him and then we'll see.

Bal.....Mora (Solid....but not at Troy's Level)
TB......Iwamura (Nope)
Cle.....Blake (Solid, but still not at Troy's Level)
Min.....Punto (LOL)
Det.....Inge (Has power, but that's about it)
CWS...Crede (Too many injuries, bad avg, stellar D...Troy edges here)
Sea....Beltre (Solid, but his best years have passed)

Then Arod....it can also be argued if he was moved to say the BOSox, he'd be a SS making Troy now the best 3B in the AL.

He was dealt originally for a #3 starter and our starting 2B who eventually turned out to be an allstar. He was coming off a bad year and I think came at a discount price.

I think it's all in how you see it but really...a package of prospects for a top 2 3B is really solid for both sides IMO.

Beltre is 28 years old, since when is that when a players best years are behind him? Troy might certainly be the 2nd best 3rd basemen in the AL, but the crop of 3rd basemen is junk so I wouldnt try to base his value off of that. Troy might be worth 2 prospects and a already proven major league but he's certainly not worth possibly the best 3rd base prospect in the minors, Willits who has been one of the better rookies in the AL this season and a capable lefty in Saunders. Wood and Saunders is alot more realistic then thinking you'll also get a young player like Willits added in.

I find it funny you mention SD and even had the audasity to throw Young and Peavy's name out there. You also forget to mention prolly the player that we would most covet from the Padres if we were trading our current 3rd basemen and thats Kevin Kouzmanoff. Id say if we are going to trade Glaus a 3rd basemen needs to come back even if its just a prospect.

Id do a Kouzmanoff/pitcher(Royce Ring) for Glaus trade and Im sure so would the Padres seeing there offense is horrible and they need a bat if they want to make any noise in the playoffs.

That'd be an absolutely terrible package for Glaus. Kouz would be ok but he's struggling this year and he's already 26. Ring is a generic, league average reliever who almost has as many walks as strikeouts.
jalenrose#5 might be overvaluing him slightly (I don't think the Angels would want to involve Wood in any Glaus deal; him plus another solid pitching prospect is pushing it somewhat), but I think you're undervaluing him severely.

Maybe im undervalueing him but my offer is alot closer to reality then Brandon Wood, Reggie Willits and Saunders. Thats arguable the best 3rd best prospect in the minors, a guy whos been awesome for the Angels this season as a rookie in Willits and a decent lefty in Saunders? Im sorry but what I proposed is closer to Glaus's value then what he did. Kouzmanoff might be struggling but its just his first full season and he's already shown very good power potential and dont forget he hits in a tough ballpark to put up good stats in those cats. Put him in the Rogers center on a daily basis and his power numbers would jump nicely. Ring might not be good filler, switch him with Germano and call it a day.

IF we could get Wood, that would just be crazy awesome!

I would be happy with something in between those 2 offers.

The crop of 3B in the NL >>>>> AL....so maybe Troy is a top 10 in MLB. But with that said, I'd take Wood/Saunders anyday for him....I'd add Willilts if we add Johnson.
