Can McDonald win a gold glove?

Or being somewhat a part time player he wont get many votes? He is amazing. If we had an average defender playing there today we would have lost long ago.

Johnny Mac IMO should win it. He's become the everyday SS with the odd game where Royce might play. Jeter is solid, but I think it's time for some new blood at the position.

2 of 3 things would have to happen for him to win it.

1 - he would have to start all the time, not part time
2 - Jeter would have to be injured all season
3 - the whole league and media would have to collectively agree to jump off of Jeter's jockstrap together

Jeter is nowhere near the defender Mac is, but the fact is he is a part time "nobody" around the league.

I thought there were multiple gold gloves given for the same position no? In any case Johnny Mac should win it, he's stellar defensively.

Yes, there are two: one for the AL and one for the NL.

sadly, it seems that the GG winners is also a popularity contest.. Mac won't have the recognition IMO

I really hope Jeter doesn't win it, but there's no way Mac takes it.

Wrongly, hitting numbers impact Gold Glove awards. With that in mind, and considering his part-time (till yesterday) status, he has no chance IMO. His defence doesn't take a back seat to anyone in the AL though.

Sometime those Gold Glove awards are such a joke. I still remember a few years ago when Rafael Palmeiro won it, even though he was a DH for most of the year.

McDonald won't win the GG because it seems that you either have to create a reputation for yourself with years of great fielding, or be an above average defensive player who has a great year at the plate. It's probably the most bastardized award in all of professional sports.

That said, I have no doubt that he's the best defensive SS in the American League.

Yep, it was 1999. RP played 135 games at DH, 28 at 1B yet somehow won his 3rd consecutive GG.

Just more proof that past reputation is more important to winning this award than actual fielding prowess.

I agree johnny mac is an amazing player defensively but i don't think he's going to win it. He, like you said doesnt play enough and the fact that he plays in Toronto I don't think he gets enough coverage to be recognized.

Maybe if his offensive stats were better he'd be more NOTICED in effect people would pay attention to him more and then they'd be able to witness him defensively.

V dub last year didnt deserve the gold glove last year at all IMO but won it anyways; its sometimes your reputation that wins it not always the best player( as it is for many awards in other major sports as well).

I could see him winning one in the future if he stays competant enough on offense to stay in the league and earns more playing time.

Vernon didn't deserve a gold Glove last year.

Gold glove voting is not taken seriously by people that vote. That is why same people keep winning all the time.

Hey, Alex is having the type of season that he may move in to contention; he's hitting .310.

What? Name me a National League pitcher who fields his position better.
