TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Blue Jays say that they will designate shortstop Royce Clayton for assignment before Friday's game against the Texas Rangers.

Johnny Mac has similar offensive numbers and his defense is way better than Clayton's.

I like Royce, but he's done now...

Yeah I had no idea why we signed him. He is just Johnny Mac, only older.

Maybe Ray Olmedo will be called up.

I can honestly say that Russ Adams should get a shot before him. They have more invested in the kid IMO. Let him have a last chance with the team at 2B and see how Hill does at SS. I'm a big fan of Adams bat in the 2 hole when/if he can develop.

But Olmedo could play third base and give our slumping 3rd base a couple days off here and there.

I never saw him play though, and I agree that it would be nice to see Adams around again...but maybe not this season cause he won't be able to prove himself enough again, now.

Hill or McDonald can also play third as well as Howie Clark.....but you do make a good point though about Glaus.

Yeah, I forgot about Clark...I'm not really impressed with him, but I haven't seen enough to really tell. I know that he can play pretty much anywhere on the field though.

Hmm, I kind of like Hill at 2B and would rather not potentially mess that up by moving him; however, I guess with the way the Jays are playing, they're not really in contention for anything right now, so a few errors here and there don't matter.

The only reason I suggested Olmedo is because he has been hitting for a pretty good average in Syracuse (.290) as opposed to Adams (.259) and plus, I'd rather not see Hill split time with Adams, that is, unless, as you say, Hill is moved to SS. As far as I'm concerned, if Olmedo becomes a nice contact hitter at the Majors, that is what this team needs most.

Felipe Lopez could be our SS right now. Too bad we traded him for a pitcher I never heard of...

It's not like he is doing that great. Now Michael Young for Loaiza, that hurts.

Well Lopez was an All Star in '05 and can steal about 30-40 bases if he plays everyday, and I think we definitly need speed.

But yeah, that trade you mentionned hurts a lot too. Especially that Loaiza had his best season right after he left Toronto.

Lopez is apparently a horrible defensive SS. He's better suited for 3B, and coupled with his dwindling offensive production, his value has dropped substantially. I hated the deal at the time, and still do, but Lopez hasn't lived up to his expectations outside of his one good year (2005).

Olmedo looks like a solid reserve player. He's good defensively and has hit for good average with a decent walk total in the minors. He's not a long-term answer at short, but as a back-up, he should be a slightly better version of McDonald.

I would still take Lopez over any of our current SS.

McDonald is an exciting gold glove type of player but I mean we got good defense at pretty much every position (except for catcher...). But like you said, Olmedo does indeed look like a solid reserve.

This was just a ridiculously bad signing to begin with. Clayton didn't have much of a bat left and has lost so much range that McDonald was far superior at this point. So if it was defense they were looking for, why didn't they just go with McDonalde out of the gate? And if they wanted more offense, Belliard was sitting there unwanted the entire off-season before the Sen's signed him for cheap. He could have worked his way into the picture with Hill moving over to SS at times.

So how many of JP's off-season signings left? Stairs, a grossly overpaid Frank Thomas and who else? And the way Stairs has hit, wouldn't the Thomas money have been better spent somewhere else?

Thomson, Ohka, Zambrano and Clayton are all gone and the farm system continues to sink into one of the league's worst. This team is going nowhere as long as JP is calling the shots.

The only move that involved a big sum of money was Thomas...who isn't hitting for average, but leads the team in OBP.

Luckily for the Jays the moves the fizzled were low cost moves. All of them were signed for 1 million of less a year and JP just took a chance....and it didn't work out. Now, signing Wells to that contract if he's as bad as he is right now might hurt in a year or two.
