I know he's got a history of being a great closer, but given his immense struggles at the end of last year isn't this a ridiculous amount for him?
With this and Linebrink getting 4 years, 19 mil, I think we could get a king's ransom for Janssen, Accardo or League, if BJ comes back healthy.

I'd have no problem trading League if some team wants to overvalue him. If Gagne can be overvalued, JP needs to figure out a way to make League.
Accardo should already be overvalued. But when is BJ scheduled to come back? Mid season?

What surprised me most was that I read that this was BEFORE bonuses.

Personally, I'd be more worried towards the amount of years in the contract. A 1 year deal seems reasonable for Gagne. The Brewers coughed up some digits, but whether or not Gangne pans out; he'll be off the books the following year. Not really a high risk signing as it seems..

Well, with no cap, nothing is ever a risk in baseball. But we know Milwaukee has little to spend. This smacks of a team trying to buy a few fans by selling this guy as one of the best closers of all time. Hopefully sell some seasons tickets. Then when the guy fails, it won't matter. A $10M investment to buy some season's tickets.

Nice contradictory.
They didn't trade away anyone to get him like they almost did in July. He will really solidify the backend of the bullpen and theres no problem reducing Turnbow's role into a Closer/Setup role with a comfortable 3 run lead and save Gagne and Riske for closer games. People are quick to forget that Gagne while pitching in the AL had a 2.11 ERA with 16 saves in 17 chances last season for the Rangers. The guy pitched bad in Bos in a reduced role and still finished the season with a 3.81 ERA. Also at 10mil and 1 year Melvin saved the Brewers in case he does turn out sour...

Contradictory? haha At least with Gagne back in the NL, I can cheer for him again. I hope he gets back on track.

Which makes me wonder. What if we had signed Thomas to a one year deal last year. $10M or $15 or whatever. You think JP would want him back this year based on what he did last year?

See this is the type of signings that JP should be looking for. Like others have echoed, the 1 year contract is never a bad move.
If Gagne pitches well and Milwaukee competes for a playoff spot, they keep him. And if he pitches well and the Brewers fade, they trade him for prospects like the Rangers did with him last season. And if he disappoints, they're not stuck with him on a multi-year contact.
It's the type of low-risk, high reward signing that more teams should be making.

How is Gagne not excelling in a reduced role contradictory to Gagne being better utilized in close games? Why do I even bother
