Jays Sign RP Armando Benitez to minor league deal

Post#1 » by jalenrose#5 » Tue Mar 11, 2008 4:33 pm

Another move out of left field by the blue jays....

The Toronto Blue Jays signed reliever Armando Benitez to a minor-league contract on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old right-hander split last season between the San Francisco Giants and Florida Marlins, going a combined 2-8 with 17 saves and an earned-run average of 5.37.

His still-gaudy strikeout numbers are probably responsible for this signing...JP probably assumes that his opp BA will drop when backed by an excellent defense. Unfortunately, no number of Gold Glovers can defend against walks and home runs.

Still, not a bad no-risk signing.

Nice low risk signing. We've got enough depth in the bullpen that one or two of those guys could become trade bait in the summer in order to plug another issue.

Nurse is below average at best.
Masai is overrated.
I dont get how so many people believe in the raptors, they have zero to chance to win it all.

I like the signing especially if BJ and Janssen are not available to start opening day. He could end up being a good go to guy in the event of mid-season injuries as well. I like that JP made this deal as soon as it appeared there might be a problem with Janssen. Nice pick up but hopefully we never need him.

Exactly, it's a good pick up for depth but I hope we won't have to rely on him. He's far from being the Benitez of '04.

Any chance this guy is around on opening day or will he start in the minors?

In '04 this guy had 47 saves in 64 innings with an ERA of 1.29. He's nowhere near that level, but this is a great signing. With Ryan and Jannesen out, we need depth.
