July 31st Trade Deadline Thread

Post#1 » by evilRyu » Thu Jul 31, 2008 4:55 am

I'll use this thread to post all trades, and legit rumors. Let's hope for an exciting trading deadline with lots of moves!! Just to let everyone know, the deadline is 4PM EST.....

There's been big talk with Manny Ramirez going to the Marlins..... not sure how legit "baseball prospectus" is, but here is their article: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=967

The Commissioner’s Office has been informed of a deal involving the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins. The Commissioner has to sign off on any deal involving cash considerations of more than a million dollars, and there was clearly going to be cash involved in any deal involving these teams. There’s also some formality about Manny Ramirez waiving his 10-and-5 rights, and no-trade clause, and I’ll admit not understanding the technicalities.

Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (Red Sox), and cash (likely covering Ramirez’s remaining salary)

Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two Marlins, one Red Sox)

Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow

Also, this one is a done deal: Pudge Rodriguez is going to the Yankees for Farnsworth

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=A ... &type=lgns
The New York Yankees traded reliever Kyle Farnsworth to the Tigers for former All-Star catcher Pudge Rodriguez, at a time when Farnsworth had finally begun to pitch to his contract and Rodriguez was again hitting.

Both players are free agents at the end of the season

Manny to Florida sounds interesting, but i don't think they would want to give up that many young players for a rental player.

I want to see some big trades just to see things shaken up.

well the Griffey trade is now official.. just pending league approval

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3512365
Ken Griffey Jr. approved a trade from the Cincinnati Reds to the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, paving the way for the future Hall of Famer to pursue a spot in the World Series for the first time in his career.

The deal is subject to the approval of commissioner Bud Selig's office, said a baseball source, who added that MLB approval is expected to be a "rubber stamp.''

The Reds will receive pitcher Nick Masset and infielder Danny Richar in return.

Looks like the Jays are making a last ditch effort for Bay. Before the 3 way deal is final.

Blue Jays in the mix for Bay

As the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates continue to try to piece together their Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay blockbuster, the buzz around the sport is that the Pirates are still talking to other teams about Bay.

The latest team to make a run is Toronto. It seems doubtful that the Blue Jays would give up the three-prospect package Pittsburgh is looking for, almost certainly starting with outfield phenom Travis Snider. But Toronto and Pittsburgh were still talking as of Thursday afternoon.

Blue Jays talking about Ibanez

Jason Bay isn't the only bat the Blue Jays have made a run at today. They're also in on Seattle's Raul Ibanez. Ibanez was linked to the Mets and Cubs earlier in the week, but Seattle didn't like the offers from either team.

JP not willing to give up on the season still.

Well, Ibanez is a free agent after this year, and his two-year production is probably Class A worthy. If JP believes he can pull one over on Seattle's notoriously awful management and pilfer the comp picks (assuming that Ibanez wouldn't take arbitration to be our DH), that's one thing. If JP actually thinks he'll help us in the 'playoff race', he's a dolt.

For Bay I am fine with moving any 3 prospects not named Snider, or Arencebia. For Ibanez that list expands to include Cecil, Cooper, Ahrens, and Eiland.

I think JP is feeling the pressure now. It's now or never for him.. and I hope it's never again.

Like Schadenfreude said he better not gut our farm system for any of these players, or else they'll be some ass whoopin!

According to the Pittsburgh post gazette through Rotoworld:

Basicly The Pirates wanted Travis Snider and Shaun Marcum for Bay...The Jays refused immediatly

Thank god!

Heh, if the Pirates are all over an offer of Scott Campbell, Adam Lind, and Kyle Ginley, sure. But they are surely asking for the moon, and we're in no position to give it.

With regards to Ibanez, my list of untradeables includes everyone except for Ricky Romero and Trystan Magnuson. He's in his mid-80s, and the only help he brings is the comp picks. Trading a real prospect for imaginary prospects is a bad move.

Would you give up Adam Lind though?
