This team is not going anywhere thanks to the economy but mostly JP. I say we trade Wells to whoever will take his contract (Yankees?). I saw somewhere a proposed trade that would send Wells to NY for Nady, Ian Kennedy, and a prospect. The Yankees can't sign anymore A or B free agents so I think they might consider this. This gives us another good young pitcher, a prospect that would help our thin farm system and Nady who isn't that much of a downgrade from Wells. It gives the Yankees a former all-star who has the potential to hit 30-40 HR's with an avg. over 300, especially with the hitters he would be surrounded by. Giving Wells that massive contract was a mistake and this would be a way to save face while at the same time not hurting the team in the immidiate future. Thoughts?

i'd definitely in for trading Wells.. not too many teams would like to swallow his contract though... Although I'd hate to trade within the division though.....

Who wouldn't love to get rid of that contract. Only problem is not even the Yankees would want that contract.

Well the Yankees don't exactly always make the best fiscal decisions so you never know but yeah I agree it's a bit of a stretch, maybe somebody will be desperate around the trade deadline and we luck out.

Nady has been nearly as good as Wells over the last three years...and probably equally good. In chronological order, he has posted OPS+ of 102, 107, and 128. Wells has numbers of 129, 85, and 121. The idea that the Yankees would trade the younger guy with the more manageable contract and the better numbers the last two seasons, PLUS throw in at least one highly-rated youngster is laughable.

The question is whether anybody in this league would actually take Vernon's horrible contract.

noone wants his **** contract. It is beyond horrible. I wish they just traded him when we wanted him to be traded.

Of course you would trade Wells if you could- there is no way anyone with the Jays could deny that with a straight face. He does not deserve the contract he has and he has under-performed, period. I think the problem with dealing him is you won't get anything back- trade one under-performer with a bad contract for a few under-performers with equally bad contracts? Might as well keep him and hope he catches fire this year or next and then deal him to someone who wants to add a better performing wells for a stretch run.

If he keeps swinging after high heat on the first pitch and popping out to 2nd base all the time this year, I'm going to freakin scream. he needs to watch Snyder at the plate and re-learn how to approach an at bat. It seems he has no plan when he is up there- just looking for something to swing at and every pitcher knows it.

LOL..when JP's tenure is over, Well's contract will be as damaging to the teams payroll as Delgado's was when JP arrived 8 years ago...oh the irony.

I was thinking of something with the White Sox. They need a CF with allstar credientials. Maybe something like Vernon Wells and Ricky Romero for Quentin and Gavin Floyd? Just a thought

Since you couldn't get equal value for him at this point because his stock is down, plus the contract, it becomes an easy decision to keep him. He hit much better in the second half and he should put up All-Star numbers again in 09.

I had high hopes on Vernon for this year, if he had played in the Baseball Classic. Last time he played, he avoided his famous poor start and had a big year. But now he's so bad, he's not even being considered for the team. Pathetic. He owes his big money to Carlos Delgado.

I'd keep him for now.

Trading Wells would require either taking an equally bad contract back or eating up half of VW's deal just to ship him out. Neither scenario helps the Jays. He is overpaid, unmovable, and probably won't be good enough defensively to handle CF for much longer, but he's still the best hitter on the team (for now). In 2006 and 2008, his OPS+ was 129 and 121 respectively (he was hurt in 2007). Only Rios can come close to matching or exceeding that moving forward, unless Snider breaks out soon.

Wells does have an opt-out after 2011, but he would be a fool to give up $63 million over three years at ages 33, 34, and 35.

We are stuck with him.

Well I've given up. Its one of the worst contracts in baseball for a guy whose stats are mediocre and will be a corner outfielder in 2 years.

You can't be comfortable with his kind of contract because he might have a breakout year... or because we might look crazy one day. They don't talk that way about Ryan Howard in Philly. That kind of money should only be shelled out to certifiable game-changers. (imho)

He's not a bad player and I think he does care.... but this is PROFESSIONAL baseball! You don't get paid to be in promos/commercials. Win me some games!!

Anyway, Gord Ash got rid of Randy Myers somehow, so maybe there are still some believers out there in MLB in Vern. Personally, I'd take 50 cents on the dollar.
