Vernon Injured

Out with some kind of strain for four weeks, as per JP on the radio just now.
Not a great start to the season. I was hoping Vernon would play in the Baseball Classic because he's a notorious slow starter and the one year he played in the Classic, he had a great start to the regular season. I suspect it was because he got that early start.

Hopefully he's back and healthy by opening day.

If you say JP is already alotting 4 weeks for a muscle strain.... that doesn't bode very well.

Is there anyway out of Vernons' GINORMOUS contract? How do waivers work? We should somehow, if possible buy this guy out. It's always something. Ultimately we can't really blame Wells I suppose.
I just don't think its going to work with Wells.

Good to get his usual 1 month injury off the table at the start of the year. Only a 60 day stay is left for him...so that's only like what 55 games he misses. This guy is a schmo...I can understand getting injured, but straining a hamstring either came from working too hard during spring training...not a good idea...or he wasn't properly warmed up and stretched. At least the Jays have 3 competent outfielders in his place. I'd think about DHing Wells once a week once he gets back...possibly twice, if he stays like this.

Actually, he's been quite healthy. Since he became an everyday player in 2002, he's only missed 113 games out of a possible 1134 games. That's good for 9.9% games missed or 16 games per season. And when you take away last season where he only played 108 games, he's been surprisingly consistent.
Compare him to Carlos Lee, who's numbers are fairly comparable, and is only a few years older, who has missed 83 games over the past 7 seasons (1134 games). That's good for 7.3%. About 4-5 games more a season than Wells, which isn't really that much.
So inferring he's injury-prone is probably wrong.

Looks like he's only expected to miss two weeks. Heard it on The Score.

This is the kind of injury that shows itself all year. Vernon should be moved out of CF.

Deja Vu. I'm prepared for another disappointing, mediocre Jays season.

Vernon's defense slipped last season, and given his hamstring issues, I would also be in favor of shifting him to one of the corners and having Rios in CF full-time. I knew this would happen eventually given Vernon's body type, he was never going to be a CF into his 30's, at least not a very good one. Of course, when he ceases to be a two-way player, his value drops substantially, but that ship has sailed already. We are stuck with him. Just keep him healthy and hope he continues to hit for the life of his contract.

After reviewing the results of an MRI exam performed on his leg, and being all too familiar with the injury, Wells said he believes he can recover sooner than Toronto's initial estimation of one month. Wells suffered the same setback last season and needed roughly four weeks to return to action. He's hoping for a quicker comeback this time around.

Damn... don't want to mess around with a hamstring injury. If he doesn't let it fully heal it could keep flaring up during the season.
