Verlander vs. Halladay opens it up. I for the life of me, cannot wait, even though expectations are low.

I assume it will be Edwin Jackson vs. Jesse Litsch for game 2?

He always owns the Jays though, at least he did last year (Jackson). I'm hoping to take 3/4, but I may be getting greedy. I would prefer if I got to see Romero on TV, but I guess I'll have to wait until his next start.

He had 4 starts last year against them...3 were good and 1 was awful.

Of course...Wilkerson was starting for that team.

I can feel the season coming already... the Jays bats wake up... the pitching sucks... We go on a late season run to finish with 82 wins... JP says he really likes the look of this team when it's healthy and we're excited to finally make some noise next season! WOOHOO THE JAYS ARE BACK!!!

The never-ending cycle of mediocrity. At least we are actually competitive with the top teams in the sport, though, unlike a certain basketball team.

Jays take it 5-4. Snider and Wells homer. anyone know who is starting at 1st for the game? what is the battle between millar and overbay?

As critical as I've been of JP, the Jays have been a bit better than mediocre on his watch. I'm of the opinion that we'd have two playoff appearances since 2003 playing in any division save for the AL (and possibly NL) East. The team has only been mediocre by the standards of the direction competition, which is a difficult level to reach and maintain.

Of course, close only counts with grenades and horseshoes and all that.

I'd like to see a 3-1 series win

Agreed. I have said before the 2008 Jays, terrible offense and all, would have either won any other division in baseball or been the favorites to win. They just happened to be in a division with three 90-win teams (NY was at 89 but close enough). You won't see too many 86 win teams finishing a distant 4th place in a 5-team division too often, especially nowadays. The unbalanced scheduled where the Jays had to face Boston, New York, and Tampa 57 times did not help either.

Ricciardi should be fired, no question about that, but I think the team's he has built have been unfairly ragged on. Treadmill? Yes. Mediocre? No.

Same here. One of my primary gripes with JP has been the fact that he failed to realize that merely building a good team was a pointless exercise in the AL East; if we played in any other division, the winter of 2005 (when we acquired Ryan, Burnett, Overbay and Glaus) would be regarded as the masterstroke that brought the Jays back to the playoffs after a long absence (ironically, it might not have been in the peak-win year of 2006, when the Jays beat up on the AL East, finished 2nd when the Sox fell off, and struggled against the remainder of the league); instead, it added a few wins, added payroll, and probably forestalled a necessary build.

One 'what if?' from that 2005 bonanza that I found myself thinking about a couple weeks back: Travis Snider was the 14th pick in 2006. The Jays finished one game back of two teams at 81 wins; two more wins (possibly one) and that 1st rounder wouldn't have been protected should they sign a Type-A free agent...and they ended up signing two, surrendering a 2nd rounder (used on Ryan Adams by the Orioles) and 3rd rounder (Torre Langley, Marlins) in the process. Would JP have still gone on that spending spree with the 16th pick up for grabs?

i think jackson vs. purcey, but im not sure.

1) 7-2 (Halladay, complete game, 0 R, 4 H, 0 BB)
2) 6-3 (Litsch, 7 innings, giving up 2 R, 5 H, 2 BB, Ryan with a SV)
3) 5-1 (Purcey, 5 innings (105 pitches), 1 R, 7 H, 3 BB, Downs with a 3 inning SV)
4) 2-1 (Romero, 6 innings (95 pitches), 1 R, 6 H, 2 BB, Ryan with a SV)

It's the most wonderful time of the year...

Don't be confused by my username, as I'm probably a bigger baseball fan than I am a basketball fan. I've been watching baseball all my life but only got into basketball a couple years after the Raptors came to town. I know expectations are low this year, but the homer inside of me believes we can suprise people this year.

Unfortunately I won't be able to go to the dome tonight, but I'll certainly be watching the game on TV. It's too bad that some people will miss the game because I heard that Rogers Sportnet East and West are broadcasting hockey games over the Blue Jays game. On opening day...my god. Hopefully I find a stream for games 2 and 4 though.
