Hopefully, the Jays don't have a prospect like Cecil Fielder coming up through the system.
Could be a disaster waiting to happen.

Thanks for the post, this is a useful summary. I wonder how much of Arencibia we'll see this year.

The minor league season opened tonight, with only New Hampshire playing as far as I'm aware. Brad Emaus basically comprised the entirety of the offense...3-4 with three doubles and 4 RBI. Marc Rzepvdgrghrehd walked four, but 5 IP, eight baserunners, 1 ER and 9 Ks ain't a bad first outing considering he's going straight from low-A to AA.

Along with Emaus, he's probably the guy who could make the biggest move of the prospect charts...his peripherals last year (3:1 GB:FB and over a strikeout/inning) were top prospect quality, but he was throwing against a lot of guys three years his junior who'd you expect him to dominate. If he does anything similar this year and can keep the walks down he could find himself fast-tracked.

Emaus is equally interesting, because his bat might play at third base...the Jays have already moved Scott Campbell to that position to clear the logjam. If his power doesn't prove sufficient for the position, Emaus might be the next to shift to the left side.

Don't forget David Cooper. He batted 3rd for New Hampshire last night (1-3 with a double, walk, and RBI). Those two - Cooper and Emaus - are really the ones to watch on offense in AA. I guess Dopirak too if he can maintain what he did in A+ last season, but that remains to be seen (he's already 25).

I think best case scenario for David Cooper would be comparable to a 2006 Lyle Overbay. Although, I still prefer the traditional power firstbaseman, can't complain if Cooper can develop into what Overbay should have consistently been.

If they sent you to AA, you might just cry. But it would likely be because they are demoting you, not because you're leaving the city. (Vegas is the AAA team.)

Also, unless you're on the 40-man roster, you probably aren't making decent money. Even on the 40-man, it's not that great for most players. The only guys in the minors with big money are early round draft picks, and that is from big signing bonuses.

Brad Mills did not have a very good outing today in AAA.

Lots I hope. I don't like the idea of Barajas as our everyday starter at C. However, at the same time I don't want to rush him either (although I think he'd do fine if he was called up now).

David Cooper started the season pretty tragically (2-14, 7 Ks), but he broke through with a solo homer tonight. Hopefully he settles down...since he may never have plus-power for a 1B, putting bat on ball will be key if he's to become Overbay v. 2.0.

Elsewhere, Brett Cecil got victimized by some awful defense in an otherwise decent outing, Arencibia is hitless in his last three games (though with two walks), Rzepetc. got torched, and Justin Jackson had another two hits and two Ks, which is about par for the course. He has stolen three bases already, which bears watching...if his instincts on the paths improve he could be an all-around terror.

Does anyone know anything about Kevin Ahrens? what kind of hitter is he and how far away from the majors is he? Rolen's deal expires in 2010 doesnt it?

Man, I know it's still early and his competition isn't that great since he's still in A ball, but I'm really intrigued by Tim Collins. 0.00 ERA, 0.14 WHIP and 13 K's in 7.1 innings. Pretty good for a 5 footer/19 year old. Anyone seen his stuff?

He's 5 feet tall? Seriously? Is he really muscular or something?

His profile says he's 5'7. But that is impressive. Tim Lincecum is a generous 5'10 so who knows.

Oh, like chocolatesensi said he's 5"7, not 5 feet exactly (like my post implied). As far as short pitchers goes, I think Jason Frasor is 5"9 and he's doing okay. According to that site that lists our top prospects Collins got passed up in the draft because of his height, but apparently he grew since then so maybe he'll end up 6 feet. He's still dominating A ball though, would be amazing if he turned out to be like a Lincecum for us.

I just noticed how poorly our AAA affiliate, the Vegas 51s (wth does that mean?) are doing. They've started the season 1-6, good for the worst record in the PCL. We had a couple players shine through during spring training -

Hitters -
Brett Harper - batting .350 with three HRs
Randy Ruiz - batting .423 with three HRs

Pitching-
The pitching is horrible, LOL @ Adrian Martin, 40.5 ERA.
