Comfort helping Scutaro produce early

Marco Scutaro probably checks the Blue Jays' lineup card before every game out of habit, but he doesn't really have to these days. Besides the rare day off, Scutaro knows his name will be listed in the leadoff spot and that he will be heading out to man shortstop.

It's a change from the previous seven seasons of Scutaro's career, which has been defined by his ability to serve as a versatile role player off the bench. This year, Toronto has handed him the everyday job at short and has asked him to be the lineup's table setter.

Scutaro has said having that knowledge up front has made a big difference for him.

"Definitely, especially mentally. It's totally different," Scutaro said Saturday. "When you play off the bench, you might play once a week and you want to get two hits in one at-bat, because you know the next day you won't be playing.

"When you play every day, it doesn't matter if you go 0-for-4. You know you're going to come back the next day and make the adjustments."

For all the acclaim Hill, Lind, Snider are getting, Scutaro has been playing awesome so far. On the field & at the plate.

If he keeps this up I'll have to stop making fun of him.

i definitely hope he keeps it up... i was pretty surprised to see Marco as our starting SS entering the season. I was pretty certain getting a SS during the off-season was a priority for JP.. but if Marco can be consistent, hey that's awesome and great for him

Weren't they talking about this during the broadcast today as well? They also brought Tallet's name as well and how the same mentality helped him

Good to see him produce, definitely surpised me so far, even if it's early into the season

Yeah that play deep in the hole yesterday was an absolute gem. Didn't know he had it in him.

Scutaro's build and swing remind me a LOT of Paul Molitor. Not that Scutaro will ever be a HOF'er but yeah, I just think they look similar at the plate.

Playing in the WBC probably helped him also.

Obviously Scutaro isn't the ideal leadoff man, maybe as a full time starter he offer up something 30 doubles and a .350 OBP. That would be decent enough.

Don't let the early start fool you, he'll go back to mediocrity soon enough, he's 34. I would have preferred Inglett with he team.

I agree he won't be this good all season, but the only way that made sense was if you move Hill to short. Johnny Mac is not a starting SS, and Joe Inglett just can't play the position.

Even though he was drafted as a shortstop I like Hill much better at second. He's just a better defender there.

This team needs to find a real shortstop, but hopefully Scut can hold it down for a while.
