Hmmm. Yeah. At $10mil/2yrs. He's got a decent season left under his belt imo. He could also show the ropes to some of the youngins like Romero and Purcey.

I love Pedro...but I anticipate Cecil will be up soon enough. There's no reason to pay for a veteran right now...and if they are lucky enough to be in contention in July (a long, long way away), my hope would be that they trade for somebody better than Pedro.

I was thinking of the same thing..
But as Mustard says...it depends if we are in contention around June to July...then why not!!!a Veteran arm can also be helpful to all the young arms we have

In general I'm not opposed to giving Pedro a shot if one of the team's starters really doesn't work out (I'm looking in your direction, Scott Richmond) but there's no freaking way I'd give him a two year contract. I'd be fine giving him the 5/1 he's reportedly asking for though.

For now, this is an overreaction to a hot start.

Unless we keep this up once we go through some division games next month, this year should still be about building to next year. And that means getting young pitchers starts. If we are still around first then, but Richmond struggles, Cecil struggles after him, and Mills isn't looking great at AAA, then I would want to bring someone like him in.

Of course I doubt he will still be available then, but that doesn't change the thought process.

I disagree with this..If by say 30% of the year is finished and it really seems that we are competing..I would not mind giving the likes of Cecil another year in Triple A...and the Likes of Richmond and Janssen can be put in the BP

Nice call charger. sign pedro to a fair deal, put him 2nd or 3rd in the rotation and knock off scott and send him to vegas and let him party.

Doc
Pedro
Purcey
Litsch
Romero

i'd do it... i think our rotation needs a boost in the veteran leadership department (even though thus far it may not look like it's needed)..

30% of the season puts us somewhere in June, which is about when I said I would be fine with it too, unless Cecil or Mills are looking good.

And veterans may be a problem, but leadership is not. Our rotation has all the veteran leadership any rotation ever needs in Doc. On top of that, I don't think anyone has really ever thought of Pedro as a big leadership guy.

I wouldn't mind a one year deal. Our rotation needs a lot of depth with McGowan and Marcum out.

1. Doc
2. Pedro
3. Purcey
4. Romero
5. Cecil

That doesn't look too bad anymore.

Litsch??

This is a nice idea, but the truth is that the Jays were the only team in the majors to not sign a player to a guaranteed major league contract this offseason, so I don't see this happening unless one of the starters totally blows up or there are serious injury problems.

well, I know we signed nobody last year.. thats what made me think of the idea.

Anybody who has watched Scott Richmond a little bit can see, he's a survivor type pitcher. He definately is not a major league starter, not even a number 5, he will cost us a lot of games.

I know it's early, but seeing that our lineup can be potent and that our bench is strong... considering we were going to splash 15 mil at AJ Burnett, obviously the money can be used. 1 year @ 5 mil for a guy like Pedro is a drop in a bucket to stabilize our rotation. He'd keep us in a lot more games than Scott would. God love the guy, but on a 1 year deal, pedro would probably perform well too, to try to secure a one last hoorah contract. We all know he's got it in him, I also suspect he would enjoy the city of Toronto as well as attract some fans to come see him pitch at the skydome.

I think it's a low risk, high reward signing if possible at all, theres no way that Richmond is going to stick.

Let's Sign Pedro

With the Jays coming accross another blow in their starting rotation, I think we should sign Pedro Martinez. He may be old, but he stil plays well during the WBC. I am pretty sure we don't want to dip into the farm system yet, and it's kind of early to swing a deal, the way everyone else is playing. So I think Pedro is the best option, He is still a legit #2.

What do you guys think?

I would so give Pedro 5 mil for a year if he'd take that.

the wiretap says he's working out and feels good...

and in print says that he is shopping a 1 yr/5 mil deal.

Low risk high reward

can we please sign pedro.

Someone say it to JP.

Signing him would send a message to the rest of the AL East. Not that he's the same Pedro of old, but a Doc/Pedro 1-2 is arguably better than CC/AJ, better than Shields/Kazmir.

And like cxt said, there is little risk with a signing like this. It's been said that Mills and Cecil would also likely get a shot this year, but with Tallet only starting a handful of games and Litsch being out for what could be up to two months, and also Richmond's unlikeliness of keeping his off-speed pitches low, signing Pedro wouldn't hurt. Worst case scenario, Mills and/or Cecil's debut gets pushed back, but imo it wouldn't severely thwart the development of either.

I would certainly be interested in Pedro for a 1 year deal. He still has a good season left if he can stay healthy and I do not trust our rotation 2-5 to hold up for the season. Also by signing Pedro you wouldn't be stunting any young pitchers development since it would most likely be Richmond who would be sent down. However I also agree with a couple of other posters when they say that if we're still in the hunt for a playoff spot in a couple months, then we'd go out and try to make a deal for a better pitcher (Bedard for example if Seattle is out of it).

Oh btw can someone tell me what's going on with Ben Sheets? He wasn't signed by anyone in the offseason so I'm assuming that his injury problems were worse than first thought...I remember there were a couple rumors about the Jays possibly going after him in the offseason.
