Blue Jays shake up pitching staff

Purcey, fellow left-hander Brian Burres and righty Brian Bullington were optioned to Las Vegas while left-hander Brett Cecil and right-handers Robert Ray and Brian Wolfe were recalled.

Blue Jays optioned LHP Brian Burres to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Burres had a 14.21 ERA in two starts since taking over for Ricky Romero in the starting rotation last week. The team isn't expected to announce his replacement on the roster until Friday. Casey Janssen was recently sent to Dunedin on a rehab assignemtn, but he likely isn't ready to make a return to the rotation just yet. They may give Fabio Castro a shot.

Looks like the Blue Jays didn't like his home run difficulties Thursday night. LHP Brett Cecil was called up to take Purcey's spot on the roster. Cecil should make his first start with Toronto on Tuesday.

Purcey got sent down? Damn, they didn't give him much time at all. Although I suppose if he had had actually thrown strikes like he was capable of he wouldn't be in this predicament now. With Romero, Janssen, and Litsch coming back within the month, he may have just failed in his one opportunity to be a major league pitcher.
As for Cecil, well I think his poor infield defense in Vegas is hurting him. Most of his balls in play are on the ground, and he hasn't even allowed a HR this season. I think he'll be fine in Toronto, and it appears he's here to stay.
Ray is just a stopgap option until Romero/Janssen return in a week or so. Far better than throwing Burres out there a couple more times I guess.

This is the Jays rotation now:
Halladay
Ray (he'll be starting tomorrow, I presume)
Richmond
Tallet
Cecil
When Romero, Janssen, and Litsch return, you'll definitely see Ray head back to AAA and Tallet go back to the BP. I wonder what happens with that other spot. I guess Cecil might just stay in the rotation, and Janssen might also go to the BP in Wolfe's spot.

Janssen was going to make the rotation out of Spring Training before he hurt himself and he went 4 innings in his first rehab start. I think Janssen will be up as a starter if/when he does return.
Romero, Litsch, and Janssen will likely replace Tallet, Cecil, and whoever is replacing Purcey at the moment. If Cecil impresses in his first few outings then he might stay on, but the Jays seemed pretty intent on having Janssen in the rotation.
Personally, I don't think Litsch will be back. Or he will come back, struggle, and then go on the DL again. Maybe it is just my pessimism with all the pitcher injuries recently, but I think he will go under the knife before the season is over. Just a bad feeling.

Is there a reason to be concerned that Cecil is 0-3 with an era over 8 in 4 starts so far in AAA? All the hype he was getting, I thought he was tearing it up.

Alot of our pitchers are on innings limits, so I'm thinking that is why we are not seeing Accardo up. Wolfe is more of a innings eater out of the bullpen and with the uncertainty in the rotation we need more of those guys in the bullpen. We will see Accardo on the team eventually, he will get his chance, I am surprised though that they haven't brought him up yet. But from what I've heard he hasn't got his splitter back, and that is what made him so successful in 07 and not having it in 08 he struggled.

No.
#1, it's a small sample size.
#2, he hasn't really pitched that poorly. 60% of his balls in play have been hit on the ground, which suggests a poor infield defense. He also hasn't allowed a HR.

Also the PCL is a great hitters league.

good move by the Jays. gotta send the struggling pitchers down early and not when it's too late.
