Dellucci would figure to basically take Millar's ABs as a stopgap until Snider is ready, but he can also play the outfield which offers a bit more versatility over Millar. I can't claim to know how much the guy has left in the tank, but maybe he can help. Apparently he would prefer Texas which seems to be a natural fit because of Hamilton's injury, but we'll see what happens.

We have way more of a need for Delucci than Texas does, not that he is that good.

I don't think we have need him, really, as he's three years removed from being particularly useful. Dellucci doesn't hit righties that well these days, which is something of a problem given that he is (and always has been) utterly hopeless against lefties. We ditched Brad Wilkerson once, no need to bring him back under an assumed name.

Delucci would hit righties better than Millar will this season, and how he hits lefties is irrelevant. Obviously, I'd prefer to have Snider hitting here in full time (or I'd prefer to sign Barry Bonds), but that doesn't appear like it's going to happen.

But he doesn't hit righties better than Bautista at this juncture, so I see little point to handing blowing a roster spot on him.

The bit about lefties was a snide way of pointing out that he's not very good against anyone, and at 35 isn't likely to experience a rebirth.

Bautista has a career .685 OPS in his career vs. righties (.676 this year). Dellucci has a career .808 OPS vs. righties (.746 OPS in 2008).

While he isn't a significant upgrade on anything we have, he is an upgrade against RH pitching. This isn't debatable.

Yes, he isn't a good player, but he doesn't have to experience a rebirth to have some value for this team. Millar isn't an everyday DH, and Bautista is a horrible hitter against RH. Obviously I'd love to have a better hitter in his spot, but any possible improvement that comes with no risk is fine with me.

The problem with Wilkerson wasn't that JP acquired him. There was absolutely nothing wrong with him trying to improve the OF last year, and Wilkerson was coming off a decent enough year in 2007 for the Rangers. It was a good low risk/medium reward move.

The real problem was keeping Wilkerson on the team way too long once he proved that he was worthless. Apparently this is your fear in regard to Dellucci, because I see no other reason to oppose this.

I think we need to bring in someone better than Dellucci. I think JP needs to package a few prospects and a major leaguer or two and bring in a beast. Hopefully one that when the Jays go into NY or Boston the men have to hide the women and the children from fear of facing this guy. Dellucci is not that guy.

Last I checked...Barry Bonds was still a FA. You wouldn't have to give any prospects up for him.

Although you'd have to get by the whole blackballed from the league thing...

And Bonds would put a lot more people in the seats as well. It's win win.

Not since he went into decline. His OPS vs. righties the last three seasons have been .709, .746, and .703. For Bautista, his three-year numbers are .742, .648, .676. So Dellucci might be marginally better, but not by enough to warrant a roster spot.

I would have preferred for it to have come at the expense of John McDonald. If only Joe Inglett knew how to play SS...

I'm not convinced that Dellucci will be a better hitter than Millar. Moreover the team doesn't really need him in the field with the versatility of Inglett and especially Bautista who is an excellent corner outfielder.

Still I don't mind this as a depth move.

So looks like Big Snide isn't going to see action in LV until July at least, with a bad back. That would explain this depth move.

Even if Dellucci doesn't hit like his career numbers against RH, he should be better than those two.
