i think they need to cut ties with wells becuase he is lookin to be washed up. try our best to move him. also we need another cleanup guy in the line up i dunno whos available but some one can tell me i guess

We need more pop to our bats. We've always lacked an identity as an offense, in terms of power offense versus speed. And since we don't run that much, we need at least one elite bat in the lineup. Speaking plainly, we need to replace Wells with a legitimate power threat, but that's not likely to happen soon.

I think Wells can be a productive part of the offense. He hit .300 with 20 homers in 2/3rds of a season last year, those are very solid numbers.

That being said even when Wells is at his best this team does need more pop. Kevin Millar can no longer be a starter on a contending team, it's just crazy. Eventually Snider can become that 30-40 homer guy but not everyone wants to wait for that. Unfortunately, we might have to.

Yeah, Wells puts up solid numbers. But we don't need "productive," "solid." We need "elite," and he is not that. I hope Snider comes along, he has that potential.

i think we have to stay course, any major upgrades are gonna cost Snider and Cecil, there is no way i'm trading those guys

Would you, though? Is he even healthy? I guess he's healthy enough to throw low pitch counts down south, but is he going to be an effective Major League pitcher if/when he comes back? He was pretty brutal last year when he came back from injury despite the improved zip in his fastball.

If he could be 2006 Pedro, then that'd be amazing, but is the team really going to shell out $5M+ for Pedro?

That'd be neat though, throwing Halladay and Pedro out there with the young guys, just to have those two around our developing pitchers... It's too bad Maddux hates the AL because the managers won't waive the DH rule for him (even though they could).

Stat hounds say not to worry. Vernon Wells will hit 30/100 this year, so the slower the start, the better the finish.

Pedro hasn't been healthy or productive enough for a long time. The only way we get better pitching is to make a trade and its gonna cost us our young talent, which we would be stupid to give away.

Ya, that was somewhat tongue in cheek... all of our pitchers are injured anyway, so why not?

But I might consider it now. Partly because we're still within spitting distance. And partly because at this point of the season the price has probably gone down to ~$3 million. If you make it contingent on making the majors and he agrees to a couple minor league warm up starts first, I would probably be good with that.

That's what I've always read about him. I remember back in the day the Yankees thought they were going to sign him and he went to Atlanta instead despite New York offering more money. He's always loved to hit and been pretty good at it for a pitcher. There isn't much to say about Maddux that isn't essentially fawning adoration for how awesome he was.
