http://baseball.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ ... touchable/"We have to be open to anything," Ricciardi said of the team's approach heading into the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline.
It appears as though a team interested in Halladay could certainly make an offer to Toronto without getting rejected immediately.
"We have to see what makes us better," Ricciardi said. "Obviously, if people have interest in Roy Halladay, they'd better realize there's a steep price that's going to come with it."
Thoughts?
Edit: Here's an interview JP did on the subject.

There's nothing wrong with listening to offers. I don't see a deal occurring, though. Not with this team planning to contend in 2010.

This is how I feel as well. A few years ago Josh Beckett was traded for Hanley Ramirez. If the Jays could get a prospect like HanRam, especially a shortstop, they might just have to pull the trigger. Save that kind of huge offer I don't think it's worth it.

Hell no. Do not do it. Halladay is basically the best pitcher in the game. Do not do it until we really have to. Trading Halladay would probly cut the number of jays fans in half.

i would like to see halladay dealt if there was enough in return. if you believe this team can contend in 2010 maybe you disagree but i cant see this team getting glaringly better offensively by that time. aside fron hill and lind, who is going to be improving from now to 2010?

Our elite prospect Travis Snider?

I think the biggest improvement is going to be from returning pitchers. Look at the rotation right now. Surely the team won't be so unlucky with injuries two years in a row.

If we do it (which I hope we don't), I would hope we receive a better package than what the Twins got for Santana.

Id look to deal him to the White Sox in a package surrounded around Gordon Beckham.

If the offer was right then I wouldn't mind dealing him. And by the right offer I mean getting a few exceptionally good prospects.
My only problem with this is that JP had to blab this to the media. It doesn't do anything aside from put pressure on Roy, and make him answer extra questions in the media.

JP running his mouth to the media again, he needs to take some lessons from Colangelo on how to please the media and yet give up no information of any significance

Man, I only go to Halladay games. What should I do if he leaves?

Dude chill out. If you listen to the interview all he said is that he wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't listen to offers, which is true.
Honestly people will take any excuse to take a potshot at JP.

Yeah, or he could have maybe (just maybe) been using the media to his advantage. He's bad with the media, but even a chimp could make this play.
There is a good chance he wasn't getting any offers for Halladay, but wants to see what the market for him is. So instead of shopping him around and putting himself in a disadvantageous position, he decided to answer one of the 500 questions a day he probably gets about trading Halladay in a way that would provoke some offers.

I'm sure all of these GMs are in regular contact with each otherl. If he wanted to get the message out he could have just sent out a memo. Putting it the way he did, at this time of season does nothing but create unwanted attention.
The weird thing about listening to Roy talk about this news is that he is using the past tense many times and it almost feels like he's accepted that he won't be here long.

Or maybe, (just maybe) he merely answered the question he was asked. He didn't say anything conspicuous, but because it's Halladay it becomes the top story on ESPN and RGM. It doesn't mean anything.

First off, I would bet they aren't in nearly as regular contact as you think. Second, there is no way in hell he sends out a memo. It would just get leaked anyway.
He might, however, call a few GMs he is close with and ask them to spread the word. But if he did that, he would be seen as shopping Roy, which isn't something he wants to do. This is both because there would be fan backlash to shopping Roy, and because that would put him at an instant disadvantage in negotiations. As is, all he is doing is testing the water, and he's being clear that someone needs to knock his socks off.

It would be the worst mistake possible if we did a deal....especially after a great begining to the year without our 2nd and 3rd best pitchers in our line up. At the very least wait till Marcum, McGowan (hopefully), Litsch get back on the mound.

I think Halladay is going to be traded. JP's already said we likely won't be able to keep him after 2010 meaning it's highly unlikely he signs an extension. There is also no chance we let him become a FA and walk for nothing. Halladay's value can't get any higher than it is now. It could only get lower especially if he were to get hurt or have an off year.

No, what JP said is that it was unlikely that they could keep him from hitting the FA market. That is very different from saying they won't be able to keep him.
