A report in Candela Deportiva, a Dominican Republic newspaper, said there was an agreement between Pedro Martinez and the Phillies for $4 million. That hasn't been confirmed, but sources indicate the Phillies were impressed by Martinez after watching him throw in the Dominican on Tuesday.

There is said to be "strong interest'' on the part of the Phillies. According to The Associated Press, Martinez says his agent is currently negotiating with the Phillies.

Why would he deserve to be fired? Philly is a WS contender, whereas we obviously aren't even going to make the playoffs and if anything look like we are sellers...why would Pedro choose Toronto over Philly?

We should have went after Pedro when we had that hot start, he would have been better then Mills, and Cecil (lately), and we might still be in the race.

He would be better based off of what? He had a 5.61 ERA last season and batters hit almost .300 against him. A 38-year old pitcher who is obviously done and not even a shell of his former self wouldn't have made ANY difference in our current standing, none.

Why is everything an excuse to bash on Riccardi? There was never ANY indication that the Jays were going to sign anyone. You can't miss out on something if you weren't going after it in the first place.

because JP knew that our entire rotation was bit by the injury bug and he just sat on his ass and said well be fine. well we're under .500 after being 27-14 and we started slumping terribly.

he did NOTHING about it. that is why he deserves to be fired.

8 years of mediocrity.

(excuse me if im wrong on the years, i know its somewhere around there)

that is why i bash Ricciardi.

He did nothing because, like many of us, he realized this team wasn't going anywhere, the start notwithstanding. Throwing prospects away to get a bit of veteran help might have kept us in the race until August, but would ultimately have been fruitless. Doing nothing was the right move, as frustrating as it might be.

And Pedro is a shade above replacement-level now...any use for that money is better than giving it to him.

i am frustrated that he does nothing because if he had made moves we could stay at the top.

#1. Spending money is not up to him. It's up to his bosses, the ownership of the team.
#2. This team is not as good as the teams in front of them, and wouldn't be helped much at all by overpaying Pedro.

No, we couldn't. There aren't moves enough that would make this team better than the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays. There would perhaps be moves good enough to make us almost their equal, but those would guarantee that we'd have no future to speak of.

Good. Getting Pedro now would've been Hakeem-esque anyways

UPDATE: no done deal yet...

Pedro Martinez says his agent is negotiating with the Philadelphia Phillies, trying to get the pitcher back into the major leagues.

Martinez said the Phillies have been scouting him in his native Dominican Republic.

"The Phillies saw me this past Tuesday in a simulated game and I felt very good with my fastball and all my pitches," Martinez said Thursday.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. denied reports a deal was done, but confirmed the team's interest in the three-time AL Cy Young Award winner.

"He has not been signed," Amaro said before the NL East-leading Phillies played Cincinnati on Thursday night. "We've seen him pitch. He's not in town."

Dude, did you even bother to read the posts above? We're not signing him, and we never were. This team will be selling players at the deadline...not buying them.

i bashed JP and the owners because they never tried when the rotation was badly hurt.

I'm guessing you didn't follow last offseason, but management said this was going to be a developmental year. Nobody expected them to sign an old veteran.

never find a need to follow the Jays offseason, they make no moves anyway and THAT is what pisses me off.

rogers is the worst ownership group in the MLB.

Rogers is a joke of a company.

The most telling fact is how they held you all hostage when it came to the leafs and raptors this year because it was MLSE owned product being aired on TSN2. Then they turn around and after months of acting like money grubbing cocksuckers, they pick up the rights instantly for a Blue Jays Red Sox series. (GO FIGURE, THEY OWN THE JAYS, WHAT TIMING)

Rogers is an absolute joke of a company, even now that the head **** is deceased, he doesn't even deserve his name on the Jays jersey.

"Ted"

Sorry if this is seen as disrespectful, but the man was an asinine **** tool. The company obviously observed well because they are acting on his behalf most certainly. Like greedy ****.

That has nothing to do with the GM and everything to do with ownership. Think about it...why wouldn't JP spend money if he could to improve the team?

because he's a moron.

and how does not making moves not have anything to do with the GM and ownership?
