Scott Rolen on the Market?

Now that Rolen's hit streak is over, do you think JP is going to trade the 34 year old 3rd basemen? If so what do you think we can get for him? Mid level prospect? Rolen may not me the slugger he use to be, but still a good bat to have in the lineup and an excellent glove.
Your thoughts?

Trade him if you trade Halladay. Keep him if you don't trade Halladay (unless you get a ridiculous offer). It's pretty simple.

Rolen and Scutaro should be traded regardless. Both are at a high value wise.

I can understand trading Rolen because of his age, but at this point in time I would not part with Scutaro. This team isn't in need of a total gutting but some tweaking here and there.

I doubt trading Scutaro would get you anything that's worth the 2 compensation picks (he'll probably be a Type A).

And Rolen needs to be kept if Halladay is. This team is clearly good enough to compete in this division next season with Marcum back and Snider developed (hopefully).

Pretty sure Scutaro is older than Rolen.

I stand corrected. Didn't realize they are pretty much the same age

I haven't looked into the stats deeply but I guess Scutaro could be a Type A free (compared to Cano who was last year's lowest ranked Type A infielder). Still though, the Royals just gave up a Top 10 prospect of theirs (and a second pitching prospect) for Betancourt who is absolutely garbage...there could be a possibility of duping someone into overpaying for Scutaro.

Well, I disagree here. Theres way too many question marks going into next season for me to comfortably assume we will compete. First off, assuming pitchers will come back full strength. Even if that happens you are then assuming that hitters who have had career years will carry over...if we trade or let Scutaro walk we're back to not having a SS, if he stays there is a legit possibility he goes back to being just a decent offensive player. Hill? I love the guy but he's not a 40 HR hitter. Rolen? Strong possibility he gets hurt, and even if he doesn't I really doubt he hits .330 again.

I just dont see it with this current group, but thats just me. Too much assuming that everything goes well when other teams in the division who are already better than us really dont have anywhere near as many concerns. Tampa Bay started this year out slow and are having several key players go through down years (Kazmir has been terrible, Upton is down)...those guys go back to normal and they add Price?

I would normally agree (there's no bigger fan of lame compensation picks than I), if not for the events of last season. If a younger, better player like Orlando Hudson couldn't get a deal for ages for fear of giving up comp picks, 34-year-old Scooter might not attract a tonne of interest...I'd hang on through the season if there isn't much interest, but if a team like the Tigers showed a desire to part with a bit of value, I'd bite.

I'm inclined to agree with you. Rolen has been very good and seems to have adjusted to not having any power, but he was frankly bad at the plate last year, and he'll always be a big injury liability. If you can get a solid return, I say do it. Bautista is pretty much just as good of a fielder and probably has more pop in his bat.

As for Scut he's been great, but he's having a career year in his contract year at the age of 34. Those are huge warning signs against signing him to a big deal.

In both cases, I think it's better to get a return for them, and to save money to reup Doc.

No doubt. I love Rolen's contributions with the glove and bat this season but we should absolutely trade all our big salaried guys like Rolen while their values are at their highest.

Bautista can't hit RH pitching, and his fielding isn't nearly as good. I'm guessing metafour would be making the deal in some kind of a rebuilding effort, though, not because he thinks the Jays have a good in-house replacement for Rolen.

Not every GM is as stupid as Dayton Moore (though Dan Cortes isn't exactly what I would call a good prospect...look at his peripherals this year).

They are the 5th best team in baseball as it is right now (using the predictive value that is the pythagorean adjusted record). Adding a pitcher like Shaun Marcum and a hitter like Travis Snider could easily improve this team's chances. Of course, they'd probably need to sign somebody to bolster the roster, which they might not be prepared to do. The big issue next year will definitely be what to do about the SS position, though.
