Anthem @ ASG

Did anyone else catch this? I only saw it Around the Horn, but apparently no one sang the Canadian national anthem. Apparently Mourneau was pissed off. It was one of the final topics that they talked about on Around the Horn, and one of the guys said that no one could volunteer on short notice.

Anyone have a link?

yeah i saw this in the paper today...... apparently Morneau wasn't too pleased with it, and Jason Bay didn't have much of a comment since he kinda missed it..

Here's what Morneau had to say:
"I wasn't very impressed, to tell you the truth," B.C. native and Twins first-baseman Justin Morneau said. "You'd figure they could find somebody to come and sing the song. They have a hockey team here. The Canadian teams play here. It was something that didn't really go over too well. If they were playing in Toronto and they did that, it would be a big deal."

and Jason Bay:
"I didn't really notice and then someone mentioned it," Bay said. "I wouldn't call it cheesy. It was a decent rendition. But you'd think someone in St. Louis would know the words to O Canada. Morneau and I could have sung it."

xAIRNESSx, what did they say on Around the Horn? I'm kind of curious, since i'm a bit surprised they would bring this up considering it wans't their anthem, so i would assume they would barely notice..

Thanks for the quotes.

It was during the final two with Woody Paige and Tim Cowlishaw. Reali started off the topic saying how Sheryl Crow sang the American anthem, but then only a recording of the Canadian anthem was played during the commercial break. Cowlishaw's response was that it's hard to find someone to sing it on short notice. Then Woody responds saying they could've brought in Celine Dion and says how great Canada is, yada yada yada. It was an odd sequence lol.

The podcast is up on ESPN.com. They talk about it during the last 2 minutes of the show.

There's no excuse for this.

To be honest, there's no excuse for actually playing the Canadian anthem on an evening in St Louis. I can buy the point of playing the anthem of the country you're in, but it makes less sense playing the Canadian anthem to represent the one Canadian MLB team.

No, it makes complete sense. There are representatives from the Toronto Blue Jays as well as Canadian-born players on the ASG roster. It's disrespectful.

Alfred is right. The league has a Canadian franchise which sent two representatives, and there are two Canadian born players. They play both anthems at any game in any sport wherein there are teams from both countries, and the ASG should be no exception. This is absolutely disrespectful to the Canadian players and fans and it should never happen.

If they hadn't played the American anthem in Montreal at the NHL ASG it would have caused a firestorm. and rightfully so. I'll say again, there's no excuse for this.

Wouldnt they have to play the anthem for every player's nation though? Like Cuba's anthem... Japan and China and Mexico and every country that has a player from there.

The Canadian born players are irrelevant since there are players from other countries. And I'm sure the reps of the Jays, Halladay and Hill, wouldn't have cared of the Canadian anthem was played.

Who's leading the AL in RBI's .... Jason Bay?
Who's second in the AL in RBI's..... Justin Morneau?

I guess the Canadian All-Stars aren't good enough to get the respect of their anthem. Bay is just the former Rookie of the year, Morneau is only the former AL MVP and last years Derby winner, I guess thats not enough impact for the USA to respect Canada.

Did I mention that we have Canadian soldiers dying in Afghanistan?

K thanks, drive through. Small potatoes my ass. It's a matter of respect and Americans continually demonstrate their lack of respect for Canadians.

Alright you know what you're half right. You shouldn't play the anthem just for the Canadian born players because then you'd have to play the Dominican anthem, the Japanese anthem etc etc.

That being said they still need to play the Canadian anthem because they have a Canadian franchise. The fact remains that they're a binational organization, and as long as they operate a franchise in Toronto the anthem deserves equal treatment, and I'd say the same thing about other anthems if they put a franchise in Mexico City or anywhere else.

How about they just do away with anthems at sporting events altogether? There is nothing patriotic about millionaires playing against millionaires on teams owned by billonaires.
