WT Folly: "Jays asking too much for Halladay"

Post#1 » by youngLion » Tue Jul 21, 2009 7:38 am

http://baseball.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ ... _halladay/

Some baseball insiders believe the likelihood that the Blue Jays will trade Roy Halladay is decreasing.

One school of thought is that Toronto is asking for too much, while another relates to the Phillies.

Philadelphia has been considered the front-runner to land Halladay, but their growing lead in the NL East could keep them from pulling the trigger.

I have a couple of thoughts on this. First of all, in a general sense it's pretty hard to overpay for the best pitcher in baseball, but I'm biased in saying that.

More concretely, Philly would do well to remember that it wasn't too long ago that they were floundering around .500 and the Mets are still a very talented team that could turn it around in a hurry, not to mention Atlanta or Florida.

Thoughts?

I agree any GM who needs to win NOW had better be willing to trade the farm to go for it. What GM's are probably on a short leash now?

As for the Jays asking for too much....good, that's how it should be. Don't ask us what we want. Come at us with your best offer.

There was a wiretap article about the Dodgers not wanting to trade their top prospects and also wanting the Jays to pick up most of his salary for this season. For Roy **** Halladay for the next year and a half at least. That had to be a joke.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

The Dodgers are interested in dealing for Roy Halladay, but they won't trade their top young players to acquire him.

In addition, Los Angeles wants Toronto to pick up a majority of Halladay's remaining salary this season

I don't have insider but based on that little blurb i hope it's a joke, no top young players and we pick up most of his salary, ya right.

That's kind of an insulting offer... What exactly are they going to offer if not top prospects?

Even if you're not a fan of JP, I think we all know that he's going to ask for more than Juan Pierre. **** the Dodgers then.

Wow if that WT is true, then the Dodger management are a bunch of pricks. They won't offer any of their top prospects AND want us to pay off most of the salary? Seriously? Well then see ya later LA, cause that proposal is ridiculous.

i'm pretty sure that is not true, the Dodgers know that Halladay for a year and a half + compensation picks>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>that crap. I mean Milwaekee gave up a million times more for a three month rental of CC Sabathia, Doc is better and we have on contract for next year too. We can't settle for anything less than what the Indians got(Matt Weiters plus more or what the Orioles got for Eric Bedard(Adam Jones plus more)

I get the feeling that the Mets and Dodgers FOs are using this as an opportunity to make it seem like they love their prospects oh so much, and nothing more.

This is how I proposed the Raps trading Bosh. Forget the behind-the-doors nonsense. You have to make it public and let the offers roll in.

No offer good enough? No trade.

That has to be a joke...

Roy's trade value has to be improved, and significantly, due to that fact that he is locked in for next year and at a reasonable rate.

A very real scenario would have seen Roy demand an extension be worked out before he approved any trade....

I don't think it would work the same way there. This is different for the jays than the raps for a few reasons.

First, Roy has a personality where this isn't going to effect him in any way. He's not going to get distracted by it, and it isn't going to effect his decision to re-sign or not. I'm not sure Bosh is built the same way.

Second, in baseball a team gets compensation picks if a FA signs with a new team. The Jays know that the worst case scenario for them is two picks in the top 31, as I can all but promise you that Roy will be the #1 ranked FA.

Third, I think the Jays have a lot more credible of a threat of deciding they want to go the other way, IMO. The Jays can decide this winter that they want to stick with Roy, and go out an add $30 million to their payroll through trades or FAs. The Raps have fired all of their bullets as far as being contenders right now, and if Bosh doesn't like it, he can bolt.
