http://baseball.realgm.com/src_wiretap_ ... _halladay/ The odds appear to be against the Red Sox landing Roy Halladay, but that hasn't stopped them from inquiring with the Blue Jays.
While Boston isn't expected to land Halladay, talks between the Sox and Jays are serious enough that Toronto made a formal, multiple-prospect request over the past several days.

Would losing a potential 4 games to Doc per season, plus the stomach of steel it would require to swallow one of the classiest, professional, not to mention home-grown athletes this city has ever had wearing a Red Sox jersey of all teams be equal worth to an extra/higher-upside prospect, that we couldn't get if we traded him to another team?

As fans, we need to go 100% one way or the other.
On one hand, Roy is one off the all-time Blue Jays and we need to keep him until he decides to leave. Who cares about rebuilding. He's an all-time Jay.
On the other hand, we go for the best return on a trade. If the package of players we get from the Red Sox is the best there is, then that gets us faster to being a good enough team to beating Boston.
Besides, Boston already beats us enough times. Roy won't make any difference in that sense.

What's stopping Roy from signing with NY/BOS 2 years later?
We just need to get the most out of him, so that the talent we get back helps us win in the long run

As a baseball fan, this wouldn't be the worst thing. You have the opportunity to see him pitch still at home games, and have the opportunity to get some nice prospects in Buchholz and Anderson, and Bowden.

12:28pm: Yahoo's Gordon Edes hears that the Red Sox could potentially offer the Jays Clay Buchholz and Daniel Bard plus minor leaguers such as Michael Bowden, Junichi Tazawa and Casey Kelly. However, Edes' source says the Red Sox aren't going to "give up the farm" in any trade.

This is not correct...they would "give up the farm" to us.
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=A ... &type=lgnsThe Red Sox potentially could offer a package featuring pitchers Clay Buchholz(notes) and reliever Daniel Bard(notes) from the big-league roster, and a menu of attractive prospects, including pitchers Michael Bowden(notes), Junichi Tazawa(notes) on the Triple-A level and 19-year-olds Casey Kelly and Stolmy Pimentel. The Blue Jays have told the Red Sox and the Yankees they would have to pay a premium – an extra player – for Toronto to trade Halladay within the division.
The Red Sox are also looking for a bat – Cleveland’s Victor Martinez(notes) and San Diego’s Adrian Gonzalez(notes) are their preferred targets – but according to one club source “are not going to give up the farm” in any deal.

Imagine if the Jay finally made the playoffs and have to face (and lose) to Halladay and the Sox twice in the series. That would be the ultimate gut punch.

I'd do it for Lester/Tazawa/Bowden.
Say no to Bucholz.

I think Halladay will end up on the Sox/Yanks in 1.5 years so I'm not that against trading him there.
However if we're willing to go that route, I'd rather try and dump Vernon Wells. I can't stomach his contract. I just can't

There is no way he gets traded within the division. JP might be in talks with the Sox and Yankees but only to up the bidding war, that's it. JP is overall a well below average GM but even he isn't that stupid.

I don't see the big deal. It's not like he has a new long-term contract yet and he could very well stay/comeback in the division through free agency anyways. It's not like we're stopping anyone else in our division from winning games so an addition of Halladay for them doesn't change much. If a great offer comes along, you take it.

If he was locked in for another 5 years then you're probably right. However, he has 1 1/2 years left, and if someone within your division is interested in him, especially one of the powerhouses, you rape their minor league system of their top prospects. JP has already mentioned if he is traded within the division, that the team acquiring him must pay a premium.
If you're the BoSox, why wouldn't you do this? You know you can resign Doc to an extension, and they're pitching is full of veterans.

1:57pm: Yahoo's Gordon Edes reports that the Red Sox offered Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden and Ryan Westmoreland to the Blue Jays for Halladay.
That is a strong offer that with another addition would be very hard to turn down depending on what you think of Buchholz. Bowden and Westmoreland are both Top 6 prospects in their system. Westmoreland is a 19-year old OF who is putting up an .892 OPS this year in short-season A-ball.

Is there a chance the Sox would add Anderson? We could send them Frasor or Downs, not that they need any bullpen help but Frasor has been one of the best relievers in the game this seson.

Edes says Daniel Bard and Casey Kelly "have been declared off-limits by the Red Sox." And while the Dodgers deem Clayton Kershaw untouchable, they've at least discussed internally the possibility of moving Chad Billingsley. Billingsley might be the best name we've heard yet in connection with Halladay, though remember that Edes labeled that an internal discussion.
