Post#1 » by Raptors Realtor » Thu Jul 30, 2009 5:05 pm

Big Papi (Ortiz) & Manny Ramirez were among 100 MLB players who tested positive in 2003!

I've always wondered if the likes of Vernon Wells were on that list, which also included A-Rod, who confessed earlier this year to using steroids.

People were already speculating steroids during this "slump" of Ortiz's and how he may be feeling the aftereffects of sudden discontinued use.

Vernon Wells is on the list... very interesting! So I guess that explains the significant decrease in his numbers.

Anybody else notice that several players on that list have had problems with injuries? That's no coincidence either, athletes who use steroids are more prone to injuries. It's due to the fact, that one's joints can't keep up with the sudden increase in mass. It creates a 'snowball effect' since it's not uncommon for doctors to prescribe steroids to injured athletes, in order to speed up recovery!

Sooo...none of those players will be in the hall of fame? Is that what will happen? A lot of writers said that they would not vote for McGwire and Sosa and Bonds. Players like Clemens and Bonds being denied hall of fame will be more of a lesson to some players.

That's not an official list so don't read too much into it.

That list isn't real, and it seems to have been made by a Cardinals fan.

what stupid moron would waste their time creating a fake list and have to think of 104 people to put under the bus?

who knows if its real or not, but i think its mostly real.

The world is full of stupid morons who waste their time on useless things.

And you are basing this on what, exactly? Your gut?

Dude, there aren't even enough fringe major leaguers on that list to make it believable (where is Gregg Zaun?). It looks like some Cardinals fan (notice all the Cubs?) went over all of the rosters and picked the big-name players who he figured would have been the most likely to be on the list.

Also, that list came out on the internet a month ago. Don't you think if it was in any way credible a major news organization would have ran with it?

If ESPN isn't reporting it, it can't be real. But it's nice to know if some random guy made up the list, he's heard of Jays like Vernon and Carlos.

but who would waste THAT much time on the list?

and so what if there are a ton of cubs on the list, maybe cubs are druggies.....

There are simply way too few fringe guys on that list for it to be real. Johnny Mac has far more incentive to do steroids than Manny, even if Manny did them.

As I said...the world is full of people who would waste time on that list. It's not exactly a hard thing to do to go pick players out of each roster and make sure it adds up to 103.

and so what if there are a ton of cubs on the list, maybe cubs are druggies.....

Or maybe a Cardinals fan did it and chose to put a bunch of the hated Cubs on it (and notice the lack of Pujols).

really? It seems that no matter how many steroids Johnny Mac he'd still struggle to hit home runs. Where as with Manny, a little help can make a difference between flying out deep and hitting 10-15 more home runs.

Home runs are a small part of baseball, though. Important, but not what is going to help a fringe major leaguer stick. Steroids allow you to increase your bat speed, so on top of fly balls going further, it's going to result in more grounders getting through and more line drives falling in.

But what is probably even more important for the John McDonald level of players is bat speed's other advantage. I think it is safe to say most fringe guys don't see the ball as well as star players, so faster bat speed is going to let them wait just a fraction of a second longer, to better know what is coming. Players who can't knock everything out of the park better be able to hit their pitch or take their walk.

My comment had more to do with the relative value, though. A fringe guy is looking at the difference between making an above average wage that leaves him with very few transferable skills when he is done at 35, and one that means he doesn't have to work when he's done with baseball. Manny is looking at $15 million a year vs. $20. It's is bigger in dollars, but not as important.
