Marquis Not Returning To Rockies

Post#1 » by zilby » Thu Oct 15, 2009 12:48 am

Starting pitcher Jason Marquis will not return to the Rockies next season.

Marquis, who will be a free agent this winter, was 15-13 this season with a 4.04 ERA in 216 innings.

The native New Yorker has mentioned wanting to play for the Mets.

via the tap.

i think he would be a good free agent signing for us in 2010. not likely but he could be a good no. 2 starter.

Doc/Marquis/Romero/Rzep/Guy #5

I want no part of Jason Marquis. He's a rather bad pitcher having a rather lucky season...he walks too many guys, gets few strikeouts, and would be a launching pad in the AL East. There are far better uses for $8m+ a year. Like fire.

When I saw the thread title, my first thought was: who cares?

But I didn't remember why. So thanks Schad.

That's what I'm here for. Though somewhere, buried on this board, is a post of mine criticizing a rumoured deal that would have seen Cliff Lee and a minor-league OF (can't remember who) traded for Rios. So there's context worth considering.

Jason Marquis is a horrible pitcher. No way we give him a contract. I feel sorry for which ever team is going to give him a big contract for a lucky season with Colorado.

Better not happen. He's not worth it.

For the Jays, free agency should address SS, C and DH spots. I think starting pitching (McGowan/Marcum/Romero/Cecil/Richmond) is pretty workable and is not a high priority.

He'd get lit up in the AL. Whatever he gets in FA will be way too much

Paying big $$$ for a mediocre pitcher, who's value will be artificially inflated this winter, is defintely not the direction the Jays should be looking to build.

I hope that AA looks to rebuild this mess from scratch with younger, cheaper talent rather than to continue throwing good money at bad just to approach .500 every season. And take the excess $$$ and put it towards the farm.

I like what I've heard from him in that regard...he's stated that the biggest question with any free agents isn't "will they help the team win?", but "will they help the team win enough to make the playoffs?" And he's stated that he wants to build the team up organically, so hopefully that means the money will go to the draft and development.
