Future of Jays hinges on Halladay

The direction that the Blue Jays take this offseason depends on the future of Roy Halladay. Either the ace will be back to lead a more experienced rotation, or Toronto will have taken a major step in rebuilding its foundation.

The Jays entertained trade proposals for Halladay this past season and, given the current state of the organization, the club will likely continue to field offers over the winter. Toronto's financial situation may not allow it to pursue marquee free agents this offseason, leading manager Cito Gaston to wonder if seeing what is out there for Halladay might be the best option.

"If we don't add anybody or go get somebody that can help out, I doubt if we keep him," Gaston said. "That's just my opinion. I don't know that. Would it make any sense? Probably not."

If there's a team that would take Wells along with Halladay, I would trade them Halladay regardless of what you get back. Wells' play and contract is just clogging things up. My bet is that Boston would be interested in the duo. They might not re-sign Bay and they need to re-arm against the Yankees. I wouldn't mind a Clay Buckholz+prospects for Halladay and Bay. This would work out for Boston because they get the 3 headed pitching monster of Halladay/Beckett/Lester (4 headed with a healthy Dice-K) and Wells moves into Bay's position without the need to play CF (which his body (hamstrings) can't handle anyways).

If we can get Buckholz alone for Halladay and Wells I would take it but even though Halladay is a hot commodity I just can't see any team willing to take on Wells.

I actually agree..as much as I want great prospects and so forth..
if we get rid of halladay and wells..we can surely get into a rebuilding mode..no inbetween..
probably get rid of overbay and not sign scoots as well..

This trade would be perfect. And at least the Red Sox are one of very few teams that can take on that kind of salary.

But I just don't see any team taking Wells without he Jays paying a major portion of his salary. And by major, I mean most of it. Remember that ARod was traded out of Texas while he was arguably the best player in baseball, to the Yankees, a team that could afford him, and the Rangers still had to pay a large chuck of his salary for years. Wells is absolute crap.
