Phillies signed Polanco today to a three year 18 million dollar deal. Pretty solid addition for the Phillies looks like he;s going to be playing third for them.

Second time in three years that the Mariners get tricked into believing that they are good by a fluke season. Losing the 18th overall pick isn't as bad as trading Adam Jones and George Sherrill for Bedard, but Figgins has been up and down like a yo-yo over the last five years...I'm not sure that I'd pay $36m for his age 32-35 seasons.

The rumoured blockbuster between the Yanks, DBacks and Tigers looks like it went down today.
Granderson to the Yanks, Edwin Jackson to the DBacks and the Tigers picked up a boatload of solid young prospects.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/12/g ... backs.htmlI hate to harp on it, but this is exactly the type of trade JP should have been making with both Wells and Rios when he had the chance. Man I hate JP.

The Tigers pulled off a nice deal, IMO...I don't trust Jackson to replicate his success last year, and while none of the players coming back are great, all four should be very useful players (and cheap) for quite some time. I hate the deal with Arizona, and it's pretty solid for the Yankees.
One Doc angle here: by trading Coke, the Yankees are essentially without a left-handed bullpen arm. I could see them making a serious push for Mike Gonzalez now as their setup guy, but it's also a good opportunity for the Jays to throw Downs into the mix...he's exactly what they need.

I think the Tigers got one very good prospect in the deal. Scherzer could still be a #1 or #2 starter. I'm surprised the DBacks bailed on him already.

Not sure what D-Backs are doing.
If you are giving up Max Scherzer then you have to be banking that Jackson does even better than he did in his only good year. This is despire the fact that Jackson had an ERA of 5.07 after the all-star break in 2009. Kennedy has done nothing but be injured. Scherzer is a stud with an exceptional strikeout ratio.
What was the point?

The Pirates and Blue Jays are discussing a trade for catcher Ryan Doumit, reports Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. One Kovacevic source wonders if Jays reliever Jeremy Accardo could be involved. Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports first reported mild interest from Toronto in Doumit on Wednesday. The backstop is owed $9.15MM over the next two seasons and was sidelined by wrist surgery this year.
Kovacevic says the Mariners and Giants might also be in the mix, but not the Mets, Rangers, or Marlins.

Great move for the Tigers.

Depending on the pieces going back, I don't mind that idea at all. Doumit is a very good offensive catcher, and unless he's injured for the bulk of the next two years, we can arb him at the end of his deal and scam the picks, because the threshold for Type-A status at catcher is the use of three or more of your limbs. Accardo and a quasi-prospect like Brad Emaus works for me, though I have no idea what Pittsburgh's asking price might be.

Rosenthal has it at $29.75m. Either way, a fantastically stupid deal.

Small-market middle-America teams really love overpaying mediocre starting pitchers they can't afford.
I'm debating if this signing or Gil Meche was dumber. On the one hand, KC paid Meche way more. On the other, Meche was way younger at the time. Wolf is probably the mildly better pitcher over his career, but he is also 32, which is the death age for many pitchers. It's that last point that makes me call this move dumber.
Anyway, John Lackey says thanks. And that means we say thanks, because something that makes Lackey more expensive probably helps move Roy for more.

Well it looks like the market is rebounding a bit from last year. Teams seem to be spending more now. In hindsight the Jays really should have been buyers last off-season, as they could have plugged quite a few holes on the short-term if ownership simply kept payroll around where the 2008 payroll was. Oh well.

It depends; last year, the most likely area of hole-plugging prior to the season would have been shortstop...had we followed through on it, we'd probably have Orlando Cabrera or some such for the next two years at an inflated salary, and no draft picks from Scutaro.

And for no logical reason, the
Orioles acquire Kevin Millwood for Chris Ray. Rosenthal states that the Rangers are picking up $3m of Millwood's tab, but I still have no idea why they want to pay $9m for him, unless they really value beating the Jays for 4th in the division.
