The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a seven-year, $120 million deal with Matt Holliday, SI.com has learned. Holliday will also get a full no-trade clause.
Holliday batted .353 with 13 home runs and 55 RBIs in 63 games with the Cardinals after being acquired in a July trade from the Oakland Athletics.
via wiretap.
why do i feel this will completely backfire on them?

I think this move is about keeping Albert Pujols as much as anything else, and if I were him I think it'd help persuade me. Right now STL has as nasty of a 3-4 combination as there is in the league.

These 7 year, 100+ million dollar deals will always back fire at some point.
See Wells, Soriano, Zito, probably A-Rod as well and whoever else is on the list.

This imo is as bad as the wells deal, wells put up about the same numbers as holliday and he was considered to be a very strong defender at the time of the contract which holliday is not...they could ahve probably signed him to a 90 million dollar contract... the most he was getting was a 82.5 million offer from the red sox.. anyways very stupid.. holliday's play will decline in a hurry like wells..

Holliday has 5 fewer seasons under his belt and has had better numbers than Wells. As well, in 6 seasons Matt has been in the MVP voting in 4 of his 6 seasons, where as Wells only made the voting twice (04 & 06) and never finished higher than 8th. Holliday has better numbers in basically every category over 162 games and is almost 60-points higher in OBP which is where Wells is brutal. Given the choice between the two players and their gross contracts, I would take Holliday 10 times out of 10.

Of course, anyone would, still doesn't make the contract a good one.

+1, they want Albert Pujols to stay.
