Pat Hentgen only got 1 vote. Cy Young winner, won a championship with Toronto in 1993, 3x All-Star.
Maybe not HOF worthy, but shouldn't he have been able to muster more than 1 vote? I would think he was better than that, especially considering he won the Cy Young Award.
Discuss.

Pat Hengten was a good pitcher for a number of years, but a great pitcher for only a few. 96 & 97 he was incredible. 265 and 264 innings respectively, 20 and 15 wins and 10 & 9 complete games....those are Roy Halladay-like. I love the guy and rooted for him regardless the uniform. He's a 1st class, workman-like guy who led by example.

Good pitcher but HOF-worthy? No.
However, if Hentgen played for the Yankees.... that could be different. At least more than 1 vote.

Solid pitcher but not worthy of the hall.

When I think of Hall of Fame pitchers, I think of guys who were dominant. Guys like the newly retired Randy Johnson. Guys like Pedro Martinez. Not Hengan. Hell if Jack Morris cant get in, then Hentgan's odds are exactly 0%. If your odds are 0%, you dont belong on the ballot.

Really, as much as I like Pat, one vote was one vote too many...save for the Cy that got him to the ballot, his was not a career worthy of the ballot. These are his career numbers:
131-112 in 306 starts, 108 ERA+, 1.39 WHIP, 5.6 K/9, 3.4 BB/9, 1.2 HR/9.
One very good year in which there weren't many candidates (Pettitte finished a close second with an ERA near 4 and a WHIP of almost 1.4), but beyond that he was a very average pitcher.

**** your asterisk.

If Cito didn't stupidly make him pitch two straight 260 IP seasons, he might've had a longer career.

I actually like the home town shout out vote or two for above average major leaguers who have a strong connection to one team. I think it is a nice nod to a classy career.

I'm certainly not gonna lose any sleep over this. Good pitcher, good Blue Jay, but HOFer? Not even close.

Re: Pat Hentgen booted off HOF ballot
From 1991-1997 he was 82-53 with a 3.88 career ERA through age 28, and had 120 wins by age 31, so maybe he could have got to 200 wins if his arm stayed on, but that’s about it. Unfortunately, he was never quite the same after 1997 and his career was far too short due to injuries. Even so, while he was a very good pitcher in his prime, he was never a HOF calibre one.
Hentgen and Guzman were definitely cases of guys whose arms were put in a blender by Cito Gaston.
