Jays Looking at Sheets?

Anthopoulos noted that he's always looking for rotation help, especially considering the youth and inexperienced of his projected starting staff. AA confirmed that the Jays will have someone in attendance on Tuesday, when Ben Sheets will throw for interested teams.
"We're going to take a look at him," Anthopoulos said. "It's like what I've talked about before -- no stone unturned. It's the same reason why we're watched other guys work out. ... We're not doing out job if we don't at least take a look. Things change. Trades occur. Someone might surprise us. It doesn't do us any harm to do our homework on all these players and to be really prepared if an opportunity presents itself."
This also explains why reports surfaced that the Blue Jays had watched Carlos Delgado playing in the Puerto Rican winter league. Delgado isn't a fit for the Jays right now, but Anthopoulos has majorly upgraded his scouting staff and he's making sure he's exploring as many avenues as possible.

I would sign sheets IF its like 5.5 million guaranteed for one year but it becomes 8 million if he stars more than 20 games, let's say.. its worth the worth the risk if he can stay healthy, we could flip him on trade deadline and get some good young pieces... i am not so sure i would do 8 million straight up guaranteed.

Who cares about the money? Are you paying it? As long as its a contract that is tradeable. Clearly he wouldnt be interested in signing veterans if he didnt think he could flip them for prospects at some point.

I don't think it would be a good signing for this years team.

Like Delgado, you have a high risk high reward type pitcher. It will probably be a 1 year contract, and if he show he's healthy, you have a very attractive trade piece, while at the same time mentoring the young pitching staff.

Please tell me how Delgado is a "high risk, high
reward pitcher"
i know you didn't mean Delgado was a pitcher but seriously, he was never a player we could be able to flip and get something useful.

With guys like Sheets, coming off very long injuries, we simply cannot know if it's a good idea or not. Sure you can like him or not, be optimistic or not, but this is a question for scouting and medical staffs, not fans. What are the odds he's healthy again and can get back to his old form and how could any of us ever know that?
Personally, for a guy who'll have huge question marks even with scouting and medical, I think he'll be priced way too high for a team in the Jays position. However, if he were to rebound to his former self he'd probably be the hottest trade commodity by the deadline.

Well, assets are a very good thing to have. Say he signs, stays healthy and pitches respectably and come deadline time we flip him for some kid with upside. That would be fantastic.
So as long as the money wouldn't be such an amount to handcuff AA, i wouldn't be against the move.

What makes you say that? He still put up very good numbers

One year deals like this are really good. It's not like we're signing him to a 7 year 126 million dollar deal. If it doesn't work out it doesn't. But if he does pitch well, we can flip him for some prospects, or get draft picks via him signing with another team.

Wouldn't be a bad signing I still think that they need some one to eat up alot of innings, an injury or two would put a lot of strian on our young bunch of arms so it could be considered a insurance policy on all the young guys. Holiday gave the pen alot of rest buy coming in and giving us close to complete games every 5th day

Agreed, plus for the time he's with us he can provide some leadership for our younger rotation.

Exactly. If the money is in the budget and it's only a 1 year deal, the amount of risk is minimal. And no matter what he's making, if he's pitching well during the first 3 months several contenders will be lining up to trade prospects for him in July.

From WT:
ESPN - The Athletics and free-agent pitcher Ben Sheets have agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth around $8 million, according to sources.
Guess we are out!
