Shawn Hill, a pitcher who grew up in nearby Mississauga and rooted for the Toronto Blue Jays during their championship heyday, has signed a minor-league deal with the club.
The 28-year-old will also be invited to spring training, the club announced on Friday. Hill has made stops in three cities over a five-year career in the major leagues, including the Expos before they left Montreal (2004), Washington (2006-08) and San Diego (2009).
Terms of Hill's deal were not announced.
Hill made three starts for the Padres last year, posting a 1-1 record with a 5.25 ERA. He underwent elbow ligament replacement surgery in June.
It has been reported he attended his first Blue Jays home game in 1989, and was a full-fledged fan of the team during its World Series runs in 1992, and 1993. He has named Roberto Alomar as his favourite player.
