He has had quite a bit of minor-league success, but rather awful results in the majors...even in 2008 his peripherals were bad. Don't get this, at all.

If he's able just to get back to his 2008 numbers then the deal will still be a minor steal though, considering the compensation (or lack thereof) going to Oakland. Anything else is gravy.

His '08 numbers were rather fluky, though...even though he's good at keeping the ball in the park, a 1.48 WHIP, 6.3 K/9 and 4.1 BB/9 should lead to an ERA in the low/mid 5s.

Creating more competition for Spring Training is good. Makes everyone try that much harder.

Whats with all the pitching acquisitions? We have like the worst infield in the AL.

something tells me that it might be to replace Doc.

however, quantity is not quality.

Saw Eveland pitch live in Oakland in '08. A's beat the O's in extras...

Hmm, another starter, eh? Seems my wish to see Cecil in the rotation continues to die a slow death...

Cecil needs another year of being stretched out in the minors before he becomes a major league starter. He'd always fade after the 3rd inning, like every start. Dropping velocity, weakening control, he was booked to stop being effective in like 80% of the games where he went past the 3rd inning.

He'll be good eventually, but he's not ready.

He's the guy they got in the Harden or Haren deal right? He looked pretty good in some 08 games.

Cecil threw 118.2 innings in 2008 and 142.1 in 2009. If they stick with the 30 inning increase for next season he will have to be shut down after about 170 innings. Let him pitch in the minors and develop a little more. In 2011 he should be ready to throw a full season's worth of innings, barring injury. No need to rush him now, especially with Gaston managing.

Five starters have to soak up innings for the Jays, and given how inconsequential 2010 is for the team as a whole I would rather have the rotation back ended by Dana Eveland, Dave Purcey, and Scott Richmond (or McGowan if he is healthy) than Cecil, Rzep. and Morrow, especially given how the latter three still need to build up innings on their arms.

Plus, as others have noted, Halladay's innings have to be replaced. That is one thing fans will notice right away. The guaranteed 7-9 inning start every 5th day is gone. That's probably why AA wants a deep pen because the starters will have a hard time giving the team quality innings on a consistent basis.

Extreme groundball pitcher who's only 25? Sounds like a younger version of Joe Saunders to me. Insurance in case one of our young pitchers looks like they they need another year in the minors.

How many arms are the Jays going to carry?

I wonder if Cito et al are going to try what LaRussa did about a decade or more ago when he was with the A's. From what I remember, LaRussa was so frustrated with the starters that he decided to use three pitchers per game for three innings each.

I guess if the Jays go with the bare minimum for utility players (ie use Bautista as a utility guy for all the OF positions and the corner spots, MacDonald for 2nd and SS and Chavez as catcher), then he could, conceivably, carry like 15 pitchers (need to verify). Then that's 5 starters, 5 middle guys, 5 end guys.

You can't really have more than 13 pitchers, if you keep only 3 backups like you said it's 12 total position players (counting the DH) + 13 pitchers = 25 players...

Oh don't get me wrong I don't doubt that he'll probably be bad, but a free arm is still a free arm, and there is theoretically the chance that he improves.

Well said, quantity does not mean quality. Most of these pitchers are mud flaps/washed up and will be batting practice for most of these AL East teams.

Any idea how many pitchers will be in camp? LOL I have lost track of all these signings. I am also assuming we are paying all these guys ? whether they make it or not?
