That's not a good thing from our perspective; we don't get compensation if he doesn't sign a major-league contract. He's going to be your starter, New York...man up and give him a big-league guarantee, dammit!

(This post no longer makes sense given that the Mets have apparently offered him a big-league deal, but it stays)

Well this blows for the Jays but you can't blame the Mets; Barajas had an OBP of .258.

Someone needs to drive the hype machine gad damn it.. Rod barajas is a solid veteran presence, a team player that provides leadership, makes crafty plays and can hit around 25 homeruns and 90+ RBI's.. Sign the guy to a max contract already mets, you will really enjoy his speed. Last season he stole 100% out of every single steal he attempted.. This is something that is very rare and only gifted athletes like Barajas can accomplish. Look no further mets!!

Oh yeah!

Mets may have upgraded offer to C Barajas — 7:40 p.m.

Free-agent catcher Rod Barajas is nearing a decision, and there were indications Friday night that the Mets had upgraded their offer to a major-league contract.

Both the Mets and Rangers had extended minor-league proposals to Barajas, and the Rangers’ bid was higher, according to a major-league source.

By signing Barajas to a major-league contract, the Mets would guarantee his salary. Barajas would need to make the club to get his money if he signed a minor-league deal.

Either way, Barajas would receive about $1 million, according to sources. The Rangers had offered him $1.5 million on a minor-league deal, a source said.

If the Mets sign Barajas to a major-league contract, they would need to designate a player for assignment to make room on their 40-man roster.

Well, it's official now. It's a major league deal and he'll be their starting C. We get a sandwich pick at #41.

Never was there a better example of the broken state of the compensation system than a team being rewarded with a top-50 pick (who'll command a bonus similar to what Rod'll make next year) for a player barely deserving of a major-league contract.

Wait, that's not entirely true; I'm pretty sure a 70-year-old Roberto Hernandez brought comp picks at least onece.

So it's official.

Barajas is on a major-leaguer with a base salary of 500k (with incentives i think)
