Jays Should Go After Jermain Dye

Post#1 » by redshortz » Sat Feb 27, 2010 11:15 pm

According to Dye teams want to use him as a backup. I think he would be a solid and productive outfielder for the Jays... any thoughts?

No, for one reason.

If anybody signs him, he will be overpaid.

If he settles for little, I'm all for it if he wants to play in RF or DH.

EDIT- Oh, and also if it is for a one-year deal. He's getting old.

No one wanted Delgado because he would take away ABs from our young kids. Then people wanted to sign Branyan, and now Dye? How does that NOT take away ABs from the kids too?

I'm not advocating signing Dye, but this isn't at all the same. Dude is a RF, and since Snider and Lind aren't, the only person he would be taking ABs from is Jose Bautista.

He's a pretty awful RF, though; four consecutive seasons with a UZR/150 of -20 or worse, which makes him the worst OF in the league over that period. Snider isn't good, but he's better than Dye by a large margin.

If anyone is going to struggle in the outfield, I would rather it be Snider and Lind. I still think Snider has the tools to be a decent enough fielder in left or right. Lind may be a lost cause.

I'd be looking forward to that Wells, Dye, Snider/Lind OF in 2010. It would be by far the worst in MLB. A far cry from 2007 when Rios, Johnson and Wells (2007 version) were the best in MLB since all 3 covered ground like an above average CF.

Nurse is below average at best.

While this is both true and obvious in your world or mine, the Blue Jays do not exist in such a rational world. They exist in The Manager's world, where you can bet your ass Dye would be playing RF and Snider won't be.

He may still be able to hit home runs and score runs but, how much can he do if he gets hurt and is over paid for us?

I think we can find someone else who can hit us a few more HRs later in there career then have him hit his last few with us.
