Pitchers

Jason Bergmann, RHP (0-1, 3.94) @ Jamie Moyer, LHP (2-1, 3.05)
Scouting Report:
Nationals: Bergmann will face the Phillies for the second time in less than a week. On Wednesday, he lasted 6 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on five hits against them. After giving up an RBI double to Phillies right-hander Adam Eaton in the second inning, Bergmann was lights-out, retiring the next 13 hitters he faced. Since being scolded by general manager Jim Bowden for not throwing enough strikes, Bergmann has been the second-best starter after Shawn Hill.
Phillies: Moyer was as dominating as a pitcher without a 95-mph fastball can be. The veteran lefty painted all four corners in his Thursday outing against Nationals, authoring a chapter on moving the ball around and creating weak swings against younger, more aggressive opponents. The 44-year-old is fooling National League hitters all over again.

John Patterson, RHP (0-3, 7.00) @ Jon Lieber, RHP (0-0, 3.38)
Scouting Report:
Nationals: Patterson has struggled so far, giving up 20 hits and 14 earned runs in 18 innings. He has also walked 14 batters and struck out just eight. Patterson's last start was against the Phillies on April 19, when he surrendered seven hits and three earned runs in four innings.
Phillies: Lieber seems happy to be back in the rotation after a short stint in the bullpen to begin the season. He had an excellent first outing, going 5 2/3 innings against the Reds, allowing just one hit, one walk and striking out five, but he did not factor in the decision. The effort dropped his ERA to 3.38 in eight innings of work in 2007.

Shawn Hill, RHP (1-2, 2.92) @ Cole Hamels, LHP (2-0, 2.57)
Scouting Report:
Nationals: Hill has fared well in all four of his starts, allowing two earned runs in each. But he's got only one win to show for it. He allowed two runs on four hits in six innings against Florida his last time out, and got no decision. He's had good control, walking six in 24 2/3 innings.
Phillies: Hamels secured his spot as the Phillies new ace now that Opening Day starter Brett Myers is working from the bullpen. The southpaw improved to 2-0 on the season with a dominant effort against the Reds. Hamels had a career-high 15 strikeouts in a complete-game win, allowing five hits, two walks and one earned run.

We lose... AGAIN! Our relief pitching needs to get their act together. Hopefully when Ayala comes back he will be beast again.

I suppose we're more than due if karma carries the day but realistically Ayala might not ever be that effective again. What's more surprising than anything else is that he had such a fine season in the first place. Of course I'm prepared to eat some mighty tasty crow on this one.
