There's some good and some bad in him, and some of the good was stuff the Nationals really needed this year. For one, he absolutely loves trawling the minor leagues, foreign markets, and that space where stuff gets wedged behind couch cushions for pitchers of all shapes and sizes, and the Nationals needed just about all of them this year. On the other hand he's known for his ridiculous demands in trades and, particularly in his current incarnation as the Nat's player acquisition comandante, for giving out dumb contracts to players who're liable to decline, most notably when we were Castilla'd for two years and Guzman'd for four (we'll see about Dmitri and Ronnie).
On the other hand his efforts would look much more worthwhile right now if his theft of Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez from the Reds had worked out like he had every right to expect it to (i.e. quite well). He's never been known for his reluctance to make trades, but it is a little disappointing that we didn't flip any of our trading assets at the deadline. We may yet do something, but I'd consider that unlikely. But yeah, overall I can't say I'd be sad to see Jimmy go, and there are a couple of guys who I'd be happy to see in his place, at least one of whom is not currently working as a GM.

I have a naughty tendency, I sometimes read the end of a book before I'm all the way there but I don't think I'm ruining the surprise when I say we probably won't be ready to hang with the big kids by next year.

It would have been nice to pull a deal off for a package like the one San Diego netted for Scott Linebrink but most teams don't like giving up serious prospects for a solid reliever anymore. Those were the days...
