Well, if JR keeps this up, teams will offer more than the MLE
for one....there's not a lot of teams who can offer more than the MLE. memphis, philadelphia & seattle? (and seattle probably could have had smith for delonte west at the trade deadline...but didn't do ti)
and then think about this for a moment...
jr's been benched by two good/winning coaches (i dislike karl...but he has won games in the nba and been to the finals...as has scott), been forced into a trade package where the team that got him traded him for howard eisley without even going through a workout with him, got in an on court fight that cost the team multiple seeds in the playoffs and the franchise millions of dollars, got benched periodically for the rest of the season for showing up late to practice or not showing up at all, was called out in the playoffs for insulting the integrity of the game, killed his friend in a car accident in the summer, got benched in the preseason for having an 'emotional practice' then went to a night club and spit on a women and was arrested for it, continued to get benched this season....
and now he's put up 6-7 weeks of pretty good play.
you think a gm out there with 8+ million in capspace is going to take a chance on jr smith?
get real. maybe if he averaged 25ppg on great efficiency and did some amazing stuff to get the nuggets to the 2nd round, but i don't see that happening.
i really like jr, and i think he has a great future in this league....there's still just too many questionmarks for a gm to offer smith 6+ million a season. teams won't risk their franchises future financial status him. especially when there's guys like monta ellis, josh smith, ben gordon, luol deng, and andre iguodala who could be offered contracts and potentially signed away from their current teams.

If we are going to resign Najera to keep him, then I don't think another team would have to pay 6 million to steal him away from us. I think 3-4 million (closer to 4) gets the job done. Unless Stan is okay with paying more to keep him around. But, you are right, his past is a bit shady and hopefully it is shady enough to keep him here.

Terrific analysis. Nailed it.
Like I said, I really hope his past does prevent him from landing in a different uniform, but this is the NBA, it is a business, and sometimes things happen for reasons beyond basketball, in this case it is the financial implications of an already capped team. I would like to see the Nuggets give him 3 more years if at all possible even if the decision came down to choosing between him and Najera.
