The Draft

Post#1 » by el loco » Fri Mar 28, 2008 6:23 pm

Yes, it is playoff time now, but not far away, we will once again be looking at another offseason, and once again it will be an offseason filled with some question marks. We do however have a 1st round pick this season. What will we do with that pick? Keep it or trade it?

I have a question that someone can hopefully answer. I notice on a lot of draft sites that some say we have a 2nd round pick and some say that it goes to another team to satisfy a past trade, which is it? Do we have it or don't we?

These draft picks could move up or down a spot in the 20 & 21 spots, but they are currently what the seed would land us with our 1st pick.

If we keep the pick, who would we take and with what pick are you taking him with?

Key words being "at this point." But, thank you for filling me in on it because I wasn't sure if we still had our second pick or not.

Where have you been hiding?

I don't think there is a big difference between 14 and 20th... in this draft.

No, Seattle gets our 2nd round pick this year....from the Earl Watson trade.

So that was the trade that we lost it in. I know it is hard to find information on 2nd round picks.

I tend to agree with you, but for a team that rarely keeps its picks. I am actually looking forward to the draft this year even though we will probably trade the pick away the night of the draft.

I gotta disagree with you here lol, this draft is big for us and the lottery is going to be full of the position we need most. The lottery will more than likely see guys like Derrick Rose, Jerryd Bayless, Russel Westbrook, Ty Lawson, and DJ Augustin (assuming the underclassmen declare). This draft has the best PG's I've seen in a while and if we pick 20th I will guarentee not one of those guys will be around then... It's why I'm kinda almost leaning for us to not make the playoffs, but I'm a huge Nuggets fan so obviously I'll take the playoffs over the lottery.

Rose and Bayless are top 5 picks if they go this year and Westbrook is probably top 10, so we wouldn't have a shot at them no matter what. Augustin and Lawson - neither of which would be good fits here right now, as they are both sub-six foot guards who can't defend that well - would probably go right around the 20th pick(and I doubt Lawson enters). I wouldn't take either with the 14th pick, that's for sure. If you're looking for a PG for this team through this draft, I'd say Darren Collison would be the best fit....out of the realistic possibilities(14th pick range and lower).

But really, this draft doesn't mean **** to us. No one that we draft is going to be a major contributed for at least a couple years, and by that time the team makeup could be very different than it is now, depending on what happens with Iverson, Camby, and even Kenyon.

Earlier in the year I was thinking Brandon Rush would be a solid prospect to look at for our late first round pick, since he is a regular sized(meaning taller than 6'1, which just doesn't seem so normal anymore) shooting guard who can shoot the long ball and defend pretty well....but that was when J.R.'s future here wasn't looking too bright. Now J.R. is back on track and is looking to be the SG of the future like everyone thought he would be the first couple months he was here. So now I'd probably want us to look at a good young (true) point for the future after AI is gone....or a true big man(with some type of post game, preferably).

I was thinking the way you were. I originally thought that Westbrook might still be around at the 14 spot, but I think he probably goes higher then that, and now that we have given the 14th pick to the warriors, there is no way he drops to 20.

If we keep the pick, which I don't think we will do. I think we use it and a player to cut some cap and move up, or we trade it for a couple of second rounders or a future first. The thing I like about us keeping the pick is it would give us nice little contract to manage and it will put a new face with some youth on the team. The best chance of us getting someone that you described would be the Big man with some potential in the 20 range of the draft with the way it is starting to look. Of course, this is just my opinion.

Like everyone has said, it's better to make the playoffs and get the 20 seed because you could just as easily get a good NBA there as you could at the 14 spot.

That looks like it is true, so I was mistaken.

Unless this team dumps camby and AI this offseason I do not see them using the pick for anything other then a trade. I they do trade AI and Camby then it really depends on what they get back on whether or not they trade or use it.

I cant see us trading Camby or AI, I really cant see a better Center for our team than Camby, so any trade in my opinion is just going to downgrade us seriously at Center. Theres no way we trade AI either, what team would actually give us a deal that would make us better for Iverson?

I do realize Jerryd Bayless and Rose will be gone early but if Ty Lawson does come out I think he's the best player for our team. The guy is quicker than anyone with the ball and even more impressively knows how to control himself and he's pretty smart. Defense really isnt much of a concern because all though he's never gonna get any awards for it, it's not like he's worse than AC. He's a Carolina kid too so George would be excited about getting him.

We cant do anything in the free agent market so the only way to make us better is in the draft, which is why this draft is actually pretty big for us, if we wanna improve our team for next year.

Stephen Curry!!! Karl would play his 6 foot 3 inches at shooting guard without a problem...

If Karl is still the coach, and I imagine he will be, then the player we draft probably won't see much of the court in his rookie season. He doesn't like to play rookies, so I am not sure that the pick will improve us next year, but it does mean that we will be involved in something on draft night, which has become a rare event for the Nuggets over the past couple of seasons.

Augustin will be gone before Nugget pick regardless if its 14 or 20

Curry is staying in school

Collison will very likely be the best PG avaliable at the time you guys pick.

Everyone that will be avalible for the Nuggets will be SF/PF/C prospects.

Could the Kings somehow get the pick?

This might be the best thing this team has to look forward to with the way they are taking care of business down the stretch.

It's time the FO and Kroenke decide what they truly want to do. If they continue with the AI and Melo experiment...they have to get players that compliment their talents and cover for their much talked about deficiencies and someone that will still hold both AI and Melo accountable for crappy D and get max effort (even though it's the pro level)....if they blow it up...I totally understand....they have a probable core of Melo, JR, Nene, and K-mart. They might get a smallish piece for a sign and trade for AI...maybe.. and Camby, I just can't see back even though he was the most durable big man...you need someone that's going to compete in the post and he's definitely lost a step or 2 from the beginning of the season.

Edit: Welcome back Rebel... and I should say...looks like you were right on...
